Title: LPG fitting
Post by: joff on 14 March 2014, 08:57:24
How much would it cost to fit supply and fit a good LPG sytem to a 3.2 Estate with the tank in the S/Wheel recess :-\

I suspect you would be looking at closer to £2000 at a Prins dealer as I sure they would find some 'complexities' to bump the price up, but it will give you an idea.  :)

Estates are a bit more diy as donut tanks are more expensive. £900... Odd ?

Fitted.
Brc about £1300 last I heard.

My BRC Sequent with an 80 litre cylinder was £2173 ... and that was May 2008 .. I doubt the price has come down in that time !! (unless you get it done by a cowboy who doesn't remove the inlet manifold to do the job .. )

Joff .. "Dieslec Gas & Go" in the old railway works are now BRC installers, as well as others I think .. might be worth having a chat with them ?? for a quote if nothing else ... 01793 612007

But a man of your ability could DIY it with some ease .. :)

Joff, I'm not on here much at the moment but DIY is fairly simple. Unfortunately the existing supplier is not reliable enough to be getting kits from and I believe the spares collection we had amassed is melted into the substructure of TB's garage now but that doesn't change the fact it can be done.

If you want to go for something a little more mid range (between Stag DIY and Prins/BRC) I can recommend the fitter who did D's car (unless there's something I have missed) :y

I think i will have to go down the DIY route as i have an engineering background, but i have never worked or used LPG.

So where is the best place to pick up all i need. :y

2003 3.2 V6 Estate.
Tank in spare wheel recess, and i would like to close the wheel cover flat.
what size tank would i get in there and how far could i get with the contents.

Remember that you can only fill tank to 80%.

Some have fitted 72l tanks in wheelwheel, but had to fabricate a raised floor, as it stands slightly proud by about 30mm.

IME, fit the largest tank you possibly can, as there seems to be more wastage than expected when refilling - every time I short fill mine, the MPG plummets.

From my 3.2 (saloon) with 80l tank, I tend to average 17mpg, that's with a Stag 300+. From my 3.0 (saloon) I tend to average 19mpg (Stag+). Mrs TB tends to make these figures 20mpg and 23mpg respectively.

Fuel savings, generally around a third IME (base on filling 80l tank). I tend to pop half a tank of petrol in them about 3-4 times a year.

As TB says, tank options on Estates are a bit limited.

A bigger tank is more economical, as its less trips to the filling station. Range is important. From that point of view I'd encourage a bigger tank and a raised floor. :)

I've a 57 litre (45 litres of lpg) tank in my estate wheel well.
I had to raise the floor up by 2 inches to fit but easy enough to do  :y

If you need any pictures of the estate install, give us a shout  :y

The max diameter tank is 650mm but this will probably be too big if you are only willing to go 200mm deep (the spare is 195 wide).

Personally I'd be raising the floor allowing a 650mm diameter tank by 270mm deep. Once done you don't really notice the false floor TBH :y This gives a range (for me) of around 200-230 miles knocking about and 270ish on a steady run :y
