Title: Effect of budget on the markets
Post by: Stemo on 19 March 2014, 15:17:32
Oh dear. Poor old William Hill down 8% (25% tax on  gaming machines), insurance companies down (Legal and General by 12%) on the fact that you now don't have to buy an annuity. Unintended consequences, George.

Who gives a .....about William Hill shares (I did actually try and buy some on flotation ). The temporary drop in Annuity share companies is regretable for anyone whose pension fund has them as part of the portfolio. The plus side is all savers/annuity takers should now get a better deal.

Both changes I agree with. Insurance companies shares dropping, means it will be bad for their profits, where they get to keep all the money when somebody dies, but it is good for pensioners, where they can invest the money for income on hopefully better terms and as the global economy gradually recovers and interest rates start to go up, they can benefit, rather than being in a fixed contract and their relatives will also benefit from the money when they pass on.

With bookmakers, I couldn't care less as I very rarely gamble and have no idea on how to write out a betting slip as I've never written one. The only gambling on horses I've done is a few £££'s on-course at Goodwood. Personally, I find the hurt of losing money much more painful, than the joy of winning.

The irony is, though, that lots of people's pensions are managed by firms that invest in these companies. ;)

There could be a better system but equally there could be a worse system!
