Title: Ford: reason for burning smell?!?
Post by: Webby the Bear on 19 March 2014, 23:45:55
Hi gays, I mean guys.... :D

Changed the spark plugs on ma and pa's ford fusion today..... no. 4 spark plug covered in oil. weirdly though the ht lead wasn't covered, just the plug. I'm thinking rocker cover gasket but is there anything else it could be? I doubt it but thought id check :)

cheers

Found On Rubbish Dump ?

Iirc it's a one piece gasket with 2 centre sections that stop oil going down into the plug wells !
Now what usually happens on most of Ford's mighty feats of engineering is simply a case of poor design ... The centre section of the gasket fails (usually first and for various reasons) allowing oil to enter the plug wells! I have seen it most on mk3 mundaino's, Usually it's accompanied with difficult start ups due to plugs sat in oil !!

I would suspect that firstly and then look into other causes secondly ... Blocked breather pipes and general neglect are the biggest cause I have seen for failing top gaskets. It's all simple straight forward stuff really!

Hope you get it sorted alright  :y

I've cleaned a breather that goes from the valve cover to the air filter housing. would that be the only one?

cheers for that.... ill replace the VCG and see what happens then.

Cheers mate  :y

Ps, here's a pic of the plugs (ignore the oil residue on plug 2 as that was the one soaked in oil)....

Do they look normal? I can see a bit of brown crud. Burning oil?
