We have just adopted a red setter that was in an awful state and to be quite honest was lucky to not have been run over. Four weeks on he is doing quite well. This Wednesday he is being Micro Chipped, vaccinated and neutralised.
People just throw dogs out of their fast moving cars over here. They either can't afford to feed them anymore OR they aint cute puppies anymore. The countryside is awash with abandoned dogs. All very sad.

Type of home needed:
Tails is playful with his kennel mate and may live happily with another dog, he should also be fine homed with older kids. Tails is easy to walk and would love a secure garden to run around in.

He is a saluki, otherwise known as an Egyptian greyhound. They are quite rare and are really friendly, graceful dogs. Just cannot understand why he would be abandoned. Maybe the owner will claim him, I hope so.

It's running dog - size of a big greyhound.
As with all other greyhound types, they have two speeds - on and off.
"On" is about 45mph for about 10 minutes, twice a day - best done outside, but can be round the living room (think "wall of death")
"Off" is asleep, on the sofa (usually the whole sofa) for 23hrs 40 minutes.
"eating" is usually undertaken at a speed so great that it can't be measured - more "inhaling" than swallowing, and they are UNFILLABLE - a 17kg bag of bakers complete in a day, throwing it up and re-eating it until the whole bag is gone. :o
Live a *long* time - 16-20 years is usual, IME
Thick as pig-sh** tho - virtually untrainable apart from three commmands - "eat" "run" "sleep" - and even then, it's not so much a "command" as a description of what they're already doing.
That's why proper hunting lurchers are a cross-breed of these, and a trainable dog, like a collie.

Not our experience of Greyhounds, our boy Jay, yes he does sleep a lot but he is certainly part of the family.
He is on the whole obedient (unless there are any squirrels or rabbits about!!), will walk happily off the lead without too many problems.
As a guard dog he is useless, he would terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired and turn over if someone broke in but as a companion he is wonderful and a proper gentleman. We would be lost without him!

We got our tri coloured smooth haired Saluki (AKA Gazelle Hound) from the rescue kennels just over a year ago, So far she has destroyed 3 double quilts, 2 double mattresses, 2 pillows, My other halfs new leather boots & various other things >:(, She has also dug huge holes in our garden, Admittedly she is only about 2 years old now but believe me she is a total nutcase,
All I would say is be prepared for a dog that is like no other & really do your homework on the breed first as they aint to everyone's taste, I blame the ancient Egyptians myself as they used to treat this breed as royalty ;D, They are also the oldest known breed if you like a bit of pointless trivia. :y

never owned one, so have no idea.
always owned lurchers, but fostered a few other long dogs - salukis are *by far* the most testing.
We had one that came in from a walk up pen-y-ghent (6 hours), slept all the way home, then walked into the living room, and decided she wasn't *quite* tired - resulting in her shuttle-running the living room for ten minutes, *up the walls* to turn round (judging by footprints which were up to and onto the coving.

If he'd been female, I think I would have been tempted myself.
At least females only pee on the floor to mark territory/establish dominance - not half up the wall, across worktops, into cupboards etc etc etc

Our two Labs are rescue dogs and with a little love and understanding have become brilliant companions. I have also owned Red and English setters, the red are called Irish for a reason. ;D
With any dog do your research first for breed character, before committing to them.
All any dog needs is a good home. The only reason a dog chews furniture is because it is bored and needs attention, been there with the Red Setter, Sir Tigger is spot on with "mad as a box as frogs" comes close, he finally grew up. ;D
