I have been plagued while on this site by an intrusive advert which leaps on to my screen on about every third mouse click. It has CNN top right of screen, and a sound track telling me to pay close attention to his sales chat. My wife, a professional IT technician, cannot shift it. Have any other members suffered it? Is there a simple cure?

Well its not from this site that I do know. :y
Its probably an adware program sat quietly running in the background, you should be able to find which one it is if you check out the installed programs and do a bit of searching on google for anyone you find that look a little 'mysterious'.

Thanks. Will research further.

Haven't had anything. Might be able to get it using Windows Defender of AdAware (free) if you're using a Windows O/S.

Can't see anything obvious on the server or database that would cause it, and would suspect many would be complaining if the server was dishing out some nasties, thus we'll have to assume for now that its local to your PC.
Whilst not wanting to teach your missus to suck eggs, try a full AV scan, followed by an Malwarebytes scan (download and use the freebie version, not the paid for or trial versions). Lastly, in your browser, disable all add-ons, and only re-enable the ones you know and trust.
To prevent further repeats, once you've cleaned up this mess, never, ever, ever run as an Administrative user, always keep the UAC setting at default or higher level, and be suspicious about any browser plugin you are prompted to install (and don't just accept the install, even if you have heard of the plugin, but go directly to the plugin's website, and download manually - esp for Adobe (flash, shockwave, acrobat) and Java at the moment.

Usually easy to shift these - google the symptoms - usually gives good advice.
As said download and run Malwarebytes freebie, plus try spybot and ccleaner as well.
Very unlikely to have come from OOF - or loads of OOFers (well those who have little protection, or are running as admin accounts) will also be moaning ;)

No problems here either ... most likely a browser hijacker, they are a total pita and very easy to get rid of
