A week ago yesterday the dragonlady trundled off to hospital for her regular INR blood test at which time she told them she'd been losing a little blood. They admitted her straight away for observation and a camera examination, due to delays this camera job wasn't due to take place until tomorrow afternoon. In the mean time they stopped her Wharfrin tablets but gave no kind of substitute such as aspirin or anything.Early hours of this morning she suffered a severe stroke,so it's fingers crossed here that they have "saved" enough of her for her to be able to live some kind of life. One nurse has said that in all probability it was taking her off the Wharfrin that brought the stroke on.I thought you were supposed to be safe in hospital!!Anyway sorry to introduce something of a downer on here but I do feel a little better for having "let it out"

Just taking this in........ :'( :'(

I'm very sorry to hear what has happened :'( and I hope she has a speedy and successful recovery. My understanding is that the speed that drugs are administered when somebody has a stroke makes a big difference to the recovery, so hopefully the fact she was in hospital will work to her advantage.

Oh Dear! what sad news, I can't believe that and our thoughts are with you :( :'(

That's a terrible thing to happen! :'(
All the best Baza and I hope the 'dragonlady' makes a quick and full recovery! :)

Terrible news, lets hope things improve rapidly.....
As to the Warfarin ... was she "actively" taken off it ?? .. a medical decision with a reason behind it or..... did they simply not give it to her ??
When Mrs E was in hospital recently she went through a period when they were quite worried about her high blood pressure .. putting her on a monitor every 30 minutes etc etc which stopped her sleeping and was generally uncomfortable.. so she asked why .... she was not being given her blood pressure tablets that she has taken for many years, and had taken in to hospital with her .... looks of amazement all round.... because they were "her" pills and not hospital prescribed they were not in her notes, so they remained locked in her cabinet ..... Que a rushed call to a doc who gave the OK and the pills were given and the blood pressure returned to normal....
Pretty mundane in comparison to your horrible misfortune .. but possibly the same cause ?? Which I would call "poor administration" rather than "poor treatment" :(

Sad news hope she recovers :'(

Best wishes here too :)

She was actively taken off the wharfrin[they allowed her to take all the other tablets she takes on a daily basis]the doctors were debating amongst themselves whether to re-instate the wharfrin or change her back to aspirin which they'd taken her off some time ago to put her on wharfrin instead! As things stand at present she cannot move her right arm and although she seems to know what she wants to say she can't get the words out[if that makes sense to you]and she's lost the "swallow"response so cannot have anything to eat or drink and is on a drip to stop her dehydrating etc. Thanks for the good wishes and I'll be sure to pass them on,I'm sure she'll appreciate them.

Bets wishes & hope she makes a full recovery. :y :y

Seems outrageous from what you've said.
All the very best of luck with recovery.
Although luck shouldn't come int it tbh. Must say whenever I encounter hospital procedures, its seems to start with asking the patient where they are up to with their treatment. "...you tell me, your the Dr I'm the patient" followed by a lot if confusion and a long wait looking for a file they can never find.
They 're supposed to know this stuff. :o

I'm so sorry to hear this. Fingers crossed here that she makes a full recovery.

Sad news indeed,I hope her recovery is swift and complete :y

Sorry to hear this mate - hope she recovers ok.
I've neen on warfarin for a few years now, and have on the odd occasion forgotton to take my daily pills. Makes you wonder if that was the sole reason in your wife's case.

I know it must be of little comfort to you, but people do recover from strokes (even severe ones)!
Don't forget to look after yourself during this stressful time and I hope she makes a full recovery soon!
I would like to say she is in the best place and in capable hands ... at least she has the best chances being in the hospital when it happened so it was hopefully caught early enough for a full recovery (even if it does take time)
All the best :y

Distressing news, Baza, I do hope she makes a full recovery.
In the mean time, try to find out exactly what happened, you may need that information later.

An update. They stopped her Wharfrin in order to stop the slight internal blood loss she was having so they could use a camera to examine her for the cause of this. This of course lead to blood clots forming one of which hit her brain hence the stroke. Results of yesterdays MRI scan show the clot still present in her brain and they're trying aspirin to try to dissolve it.Meanwhile consultant says quite severe brain damage has resulted. It's just a case now of sorting out what the damaged bits do.She does recognise people who visit her without prompting, she also remembers birthdays/appointments etc.,tonight she told me to buy 3 cards for birthdays this month.Speech is a little less laboured for her now although still difficult to understand what she's driving at for a while. She has lost all feeling in her right arm and has very, very little in her right leg[I always thought it was the left side that was affected]she is slowly regaining her "swallow"response and can now have small drinks and food[although this has to be put through a blender or similar to basically liquefy it for her.

How dreadful for you all. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to SWMBO.
