Title: Stupid me!!!
Post by: thomascdx24v on 10 June 2008, 23:59:47
Ive just replaced my rocker cover gasket today and made a total mess of it. Being as tight as i am i thought i would just replace the one ofending gasket, so after striping the engine down and having an argument with vauxhall for giving me the wrong part i eventually got it sorted and was pleased with my handy work. Most of you proberly know whats coming next......!!!!! There i am driving down the road pleased that i know longer have plumes of smoke drifting up from under the car when suddenly thick grey smoke appears again. so i drove home with my pride slightly dented just to discover that the other side now has oil in the plug wells and im now going to have to strip it all down again and spend that extra £40 or so that i didnt want to pay in the 1st place. So a word of the wise to all those tight fisted people like me out there spend the extra money and do both at the same time. Its a good job i'm on holiday from work this week. The wifes not pleased because the wall papering is having to be put back for another day lol!!!!

And also do the other bit of the job ....   CLEAN THE BREATHERS .. this is MOST IMPORTANT .. the only thing that blows a cam cover gasket is blocked breathers, you have just redone a leaking one to nice and firm, and it straight away blew the old one ......

This implies VERY STRONGLY that the pressure in your crankcase is too high .. ie  blocked breathers .. if you don't clean them you will be doing the whole job again PDQ.. :(

CLEAN THE BREATHERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes Thomas, my mum always said "if a job is worth doing it is worth doing well".

How right she was, especially with cars and I have learn't like you have that if you are doing one you might as well do the other when everything is in pieces anyway! :y

No disrespect to your Mum, but I prefer the G.K. Chesterton version:

"If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing badly"

Just think about - I've been thinking about if for years and I don't know what it means :-/

As Entwood said sounds like the breathers are blocked and theres no point in changing the cam cover gaskets until they have been cleaned or you will be visiting the dealers again.

i did the left side when leaking, clenaed the breathers too, few weeks later right side went, had a good read up on here and did the right side and breathers again, and found damaged bretaher pipes as well, car is running great now, take yer time and make sure them pipes are 100% clean  :y :y

Never enough time or money to do the job right
But always enough to do it twice
