I need a hgv sat nav but they seam to cost a lot of money but was talking to a truck driver today who had a notepad computer with "navigater 9" and a gps sensor to pick up the sat navs and needed no internet connection. and he said it was great.now I have a kindle that my mrs bought for me that I havnt taken out of the box yet,but from a quick search on the net it dosnt look like it will work.
so if I do get a notepad do I need to look for any special features?or can some tablets run as sat navs? and where do you get a gps sensor from
any advice
cheers

see if you can get a notepad that has built in gps? or most smartphones have satnav built it. I have a nokia smartphone and satnav on that is great
-
some tablets have a buit in GPS but their prices are not economical if you compare to satnavs..
-
Have you considered second hand off fleabay ?? some decent bargains there .. if you are selective and careful .. :)
I have bought several TT700's and reprogrammed them for relatives/friends for around £50 each, I'm sure the same could be done with the TT truck series .. :)

thanks
my phone has sat nav but its not hgv so no low bridges etc
-
tomtom sat navs I have been told do low bridges. you might find a cheap one on the bay I think

TomTom "Truck" is purely software and can be "made" to work on any of the slightly older units .. the very new ones are different however and less easy to "modify" ... :)

No personal experience, but CoPilot Truck UK+ IRE is on the Play store for £89.99
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alk.copilot.market.eu.major.truck
A fully functioning "trial version" is probably on Mobilism (http://forum.mobilism.org/portal.php?mode=articles&block=aapp)

Buy a second hand Tom Tom 720 etc that has an SD card slot. You will then need a class 10 SD card and someone to put the software on it for you.
PM me if you buy one or stuck with software issues.

A prat nav is an aid for you driver not the bible, by a bridge heights map,and some good ol fashioned AtoZ,. Councils put up and take down signs like there going out of fashion, also what would you do if the road the prat nav says to take is closed,or just unsuitable,..
Just buy a normal sat nav and some maps.

ah I see you only drive from home to the hospital.
when you in a strange place and don't know where you going then having to turn round because a bridge is to low just wastes time and fuel, also finding somewhere to park to look at your map then rember the route is not very practical [also carrying all the maps for the uk costs more than a sat nav and is just as likely to be out of date]as driving while trying to look at a map is not a good idea.of course if the road is closed the sat nav will also find a route round.yes a sat nav isn't perfect but as long as you keep your wits about you its a good drivers aid.

I have to agree with r1.
Back in 1991 I spent a week on the road with a mate who let me drive his rig (Iveco 190/36) during the night on motorways, and I can confirm it's a whole different ball game when compared to playing with a car/7½ tonner and doing it in real life.

been to many a strange place in England and Europe,,how did we manage before prat navs.(thinks),
yes they are a usfull aid when driving thro a large city,or finding a drop so you can concentrate on the road, i have seen many people, car and trucks in some strange places. And yes I've done it, middle of the picardy region in France, and parts of welsh wales. But with luck and swearing, got out of the situation, worst was going down a 7.5ton limit in Manchester, and finding no room to get 44tons turned, time to reverse blind back the way it came,
it was a new weight and width limit,

Satnavs are not 100% but there again neither am i. I rely on mine 99% of the time along with common sense, All over Europe in the past but only UK now.
Don't know how i managed without one years ago but i did, I would'nt go back to maps now although i do check a map if i'm not sure or a new route.
