Hi guys,
Been out and took some photos of das auto.
It doesn't seem to be too bad (I've certainly seen a shed load worse in college) but remembering my goal of keeping this car for a long, long time should I get it seen to now or can it wait?
UNDERNEATH
#1. Rust at the beginning of the chassis leg. Similar on both sides hence I only took a pic of the drivers' side
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust001_zps1b2e8f70.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust001_zps1b2e8f70.jpg.html)
#2. Sill rust. This piece is about 12" along the sill from front backwards and then it stops and goes to silver metal
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust002_zps69990814.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust002_zps69990814.jpg.html)
#3. Where the chassis rail meets the jacking point
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust003_zps9e419a14.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust003_zps9e419a14.jpg.html)
BODYWORK
#4. I hate this wheel arch! I've had it fixed once and now it's come back
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust004_zpsd5406c09.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust004_zpsd5406c09.jpg.html)
#5. Inside the boot behind the wing (last pic). I'm presuming that the rusty wheel arch and this part here are all one piece thus I can get a new wing welded in and tarted up and that will be that? Or like usual have I missed something?
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust007_zps0bb05f3d.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust007_zps0bb05f3d.jpg.html)
#6. Rear passenger door.
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust006_zps26da933e.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust006_zps26da933e.jpg.html)
#7. One piece of rust rear passenger inner body panel (where door covers when shut). Would this be deep or not bearing in mind it's not bubbling or spread since I got the car 5 years ago?
(http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee402/webbybear1/Rust005_zps1d01fc64.jpg) (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/webbybear1/media/Rust005_zps1d01fc64.jpg.html)
SO. What's the verdict (other than new car, STEMO ;D). I'm thinking save up and have the under-car rust repaired and then blast it all with underseal. Then save up (again ::)) and get a new wing (rear drivers' side) welded in and have that other body work done as well.
As said I want to keep this car for ages so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Rust always comes back, Webby, unless you chop all of the affected area out. You have to know when it's time to call it quits. Up to you, mate.
-
Definitely want this as a keeper, Steve. All of the above work to have the rust chopped out and new welded in..... are we talking millions of Rupees?

Get a quote and ask yourself is the car worth it, taking into account you can pick up a reasonable omega for a few hundred quid.
-
Stupid question but what type of place do I approach to do the work. a normal body shop? :-\
-
Or......see if anyone on here will do it for you. I seem to remember the mad mechanic is very handy with a welder.

I don't know your area but it would have to be an independent back street garage. There's a lot of labour there.
-
Thats what you get for buying a f/l :P ;D Cut the rust out and weld in new , symes is the man to ask :y
-
And the rusty underbelly bits just spray them with old engine oil or get a rag and smudge it all underneath :y
-
Right Webby--you want to keep car---Bring it over one weekend-I'll have a mooch and give you an honest appraisal-inc paint if needed--is that simple enough for you?

Symes... that's very kind of you mate!!! Are you the man to employ for welding in new metal if necessary? I'll pay of course.
Just roughly, based on the photos what would you want for fixing all that? Can you do the wheelarch also??

not an expert on cut and weld jobbie but for covering the surface I recommend to sand till shiny bare metal with 80 (under the car) and then mercedes approved glassurit epoxy 801-703 .. I always use this stuff and it never let me down.. 3-4 thick coats 5-10 minutes between layers .. it dries completely after 72 hours.. (so you cant move the car)
(if you are going to use this , be sure to read the product paper)
you cal also use hammer on it..
on painted parts doors etc 2 -3 layers and if you wont use extra filler coats dont go below 120-150
http://www.glasurit.com/uk/glasurit-801-703-cv-epoxy-primer-filler (http://www.glasurit.com/uk/glasurit-801-703-cv-epoxy-primer-filler)
-
also I must note this filler must than be sanded with 600-800 for the paint for better adhesion

normally it has a 1 to 4 hardener ratio.. but sometimes when using very small amounts its hard to measure .. so from %50 to %30 or may be even unusual ratios were even tested.. ;D it only changes drying times ??? also you can increase reducer ratio and it gives more smooth surface :) if it doesnt flow :-X

well if you wnt to epoxy chassis-fine--but you still got rusty/thinner/weaker metal underneath it :-\

Hi Webby the Bear,
Interesting to see where your rust is. I'm having my rear arches done at the moment, got my repair panels from http://www.carz2.co.uk part nos Repair panel VX459BKAAR and VX459BKAAL , also a little work on the sills. I had rust on two door bottoms, rather than try to clean up I decided to change them for some off a facelift only cost me £50 for two doors. Took a while to change over the loom (mine is a min facelift '99, different connectors).
The underside will get cleaned up and then fresh underseal on. Then she's good for another few years. :y
-
nice one mate :y what are your chassis legs like?

Useful link, as they do estate rear panels. :y :y :y Not that I need any yet as mine are currently rust free, but I'm sure it will be only a matter of time. :(

They are ok, little bit of surface rust where under seal has come off but no horror stories. Underneath just needs a good clean and a re coat.
