Police lady - 'Hello, Are you the owner of the black Vauxhall Omega ?'
Me - 'Yes I am.'
Police lady 'Unfortunately it has been hit by another vehicle. The driver has been arrested. Do you want to come and have a look?'

I suppose it could have been worse.
She wouldn't tell me what he had been arrested for but she let me have a guess.
Drunk apparently.

Is it compulsory to tell my insurance company?
I've heard that they class you as a greater risk even though I wasn't even in the car?

No, claim direct, if they wont play ball, get an independent Insurance Assessor to do it, he will probably get you a tad more as well and claim hes costs to them.

if you or any driver named on your policy, are involved in an accident or loss, no matter how trivial and even if you do not wish to make a claim

What with the house problems following your move and now this, did you shoot a Robin?
You should report and see what happens, remember it was his fault and must pay for the damage caused whatever the insurance say. :y

How did you find it? Not seen one for years ;D
-
I don't really want to involve my insurance company. I've been driving for 25 years and have never made a claim or reported anything. Even when things like today happen.
It's only a bit of plastic and a few scratches.
I guess that is wrong of me but I think of insurance as being there for big accidents etc.

I would think if the other driver was arrested for D/D and your car was parked up, then your insurance would have a hard time trying to blame you and stitch you up on your renewal. :-\ and as police are involved I would deffinately contact the insurance company. :y
-
The thing is they would probably write it off :(
Even though it wasn't anything to do with yourself

half hour sanding , 10 minutes masking, 2 coats of laquer (paint not that necessary) .. an hour of drying .. job done :y

if you go through your insurance watch your no claims bonus/discount sometimes better to not claim not fair I know but that's the way insurance seems to work.
-
IMO. It depends how much the repair will cost. If its less than any excess I'd fix it myself. Sue the other driver for the bill later or whatever.
It may say inform your insurer, but ime that's purely to get you to give them an excuse to put the premium up. Only claim if its worth claiming.
Mean while, it just need a rear light to get you going again. By the looks.

the suggestion is to read your policy to see what it says. the extract above is I think from a standard policy. If your policy says something else then you may not need to inform them.
Equally I think there are a number of ways out of the above text
If for example you do not ask for the replacement light to be fixed then you can say you have not suffered a "loss" equally were "you" involved in an accident? no because you were not there. My (non legal) view is that if the insurance company wanted your circumstances covered they would say:
if you or any driver named on your policy or your vehicle, are involved in an accident or loss, no matter how trivial and even if you do not wish to make a claim
that would cover the situation where there was a no loss accident not involving you driving

I think there's a case for a lucrative whiplash claim! :D

Yes I got a shock when I saw the Police officer and hurt my neck. ;D

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but what if the ar$e who hit your vehicle, decided to claim through his/her insurance policy as there was more damage to his/her vehicle than was done to yours, then surely there claim will involve giving the details of the vehicle they hit.......yours.
They’re company could feedback to yours expecting a claim to be made, but if you haven’t informed them......well, you’ve then broken your side of the contract.
As said above, have a good read of your policy wording, and if it states to let them know, personally I don’t think you have a choice then.
Just my tuppence worth!
Good luck!

simples. just say you were not personally involved in an accident and did not suffer a loss. In any event the policy wording does not say when you have to inform them - it must allow a reasonable time.
To be honest if they claim from their insurer, their insurer will not go looking to pay anyone off as well. they'll try to keep the claim as small as possible.
-
If I'd just been done for drink driving, I think it'd be unlikely that the first thing I'd do is to call my insurer and explain that "Well, it was like this.. I left the pub, and, on the way home...".
Especially as my insurance has a clause reducing it to 3rd party only cover in the event of a drink driving incident on my part, if memory serves.
-
Was thinking the same... Your covered by their policy, as it was their fault, but they waved goodbye to their cover along with their licence...
