hi guys
just stripped down my new omega ready for sand plasting and painting but I have came across LOADS of rust
I have rust in front crossmember (got a new one), both rear arches (got new ones) both sills (got new ones) but have rust at offside under rear seat at arch, in the boot on offside corner and same on near side
but on the passenger side chassis leg just in front of the bolt for the front subframe is a 2 inch hole. what thickness of steel should I use to repair the chassis leg and bits on the floor??
just in front of the bolt furthest back, you can see it right behind shock absorber
thanks in advance and sorry if this has been discussed before
-
blimey, has that ever lived by the sea, thats a lot of tin worm you have there.
-
I know its got loads sills especially. but never noticed til taken sill covers off
sills not dear though neither was rear arches but cross member was 160 quid!!
-
I sadly cant help with the repair as I'm not a welder (yet) but would be interested in pics of this if you can get them as I too havesome rusting issues and would be good to compare
-
that's cool I got the parts the welder and I can weld just unsure of steel thickness for chassis leg, I get pics up tomorrow of the rust
-
Awesome, cheers Davieboy :y

Wow that chassis legs rotten. is that in the engine compartment? or sticking out the back
?

And I thought mine were bad :o
-
in your pic you can see last bolt in subframe just in front is the rusty hole
-
so my question is should I buy 2mm thick to repair chassis leg or is that overkill?

:y :y
Thats one well rusty Omega mate - you may be better off buying a better one ;)
-
If is a double skin then you will need 2mm for the inner and 1mm for the outer, just finished the inner rear chassis leg on the Senator
Rot cut out of the old leg

And finished. just need to clean back the welds then the outer can be made

Andy, nice pics. Is it a subframe out job or can you get around it? (don't know anything about welding until symes master class
-
Nah chassis legs are part of the shell so lots of welding on my back. Got plans for a chassis roller so that will be the next major job

So subframe stays in place? unless of course the rot is round where the subframe attaches?
-
in my case im unlucky. its right underneath subframe
-
Ah yes the subframe has been removed along with the trailing arms and diff. Nice little design on the Senator A and Monza is you can't remove the trailing arms without removing the whole subframe assy.

going to strip it down to a bare shell anyway for sandblasting
so im looking at 2mm for chassis leg and 1mm for everything else?
-
2mm is far thicker than what's already there, and will be very hard work. Use 1mm(ish) for the chassis rails, and slightly thinner for anything that needs much shaping.
This will be easier to make, and to weld to the existing metal. Sheet metal monocoques get their strength from the shape of the metal, and so are made out of pretty thin stuff
-
so one for chassis rail. would I be better removing the strengthening plate and renewing that to? pretty close to hole
-
I haven't seen an Omega B that rusty, but Omega As are mostly that rusty and the only real difference is the age.
just for reference, I'm just starting to weld a Vanden Plas Princess which has no floors at all, no chassis rails and no sills - indeed, the only reason the front stays attached to the back is that the doors are welded together.

;D
Must admit that Omega does look the worst one ive seen , worse than the Triumph Herald i had that only had drivers floor pan holes .
-
yea I didn't think it was this bad when I bought it. scrapped a W reg cause it had a massive hole at steering box about fist size cant get any worse though
