can anyone tell me what's likely to be wrong with this.......
2.6 Omega B auto estate Elite. 2002
On first start-up, when selecting "D", all of the selector quadrant light illuminate and I only have 3rd gear and reverse.
"TC" lamp and spanner-thru-car lamp illuminated.
MIL and gearbox lamps not illuminated
gears 1 thru 4 available using manual hold-down.
"Sport" and "Winter" modes not available
once on the move using manual hold-down and placed into "D", the quadrant lights are not illuminated.
Engine ECU fault code is "service transmission soon"
transmission fault codes are not accessible ("can't access ecu" message returned from code-reader)
Powersounder just removed as it went haywire
two gallons of water liberated from the air inlet plenum for the heater (yes it was completely full)

Sounds like dodgy/dirty/misaligned selector switch
-
Selector switch dirty/misaligned or fubar... Initially.
But reading further, failure to communicate with gear box ecu suggests ecu fubar.
I guess if the switch looks sound and adjusted correctly, swap the ecu out and try it.
Although a post from one of the tech2 owners would be the opinion to go by.

Gear postion indicator light setup operates independently of the ECU so cause must lie with the switch.
What code reader is being used?, gearbox ECU is a bit of a slow responder so some generic code readers may well time out prematurely.

Yep, the LEDs on the selector not following the stick are a dead giveaway that the selector switch has an issue. Normally water ingress after negotiating a flood! First job is to take it apart and clean / dry it. :y

that's the one on the side of the transmission ?
when first started, on selecting "D", all of the quadrant lights illuminate and start flashing.

Yes, thats the one :y
The box on these is part electronic and part mechanical and hence the diret mehnicl link and the ability to drive using the 'manual' shift technique even with the ECU throwing a wobble.

cool.
I do have about five spare switches from all of the "autoectomy" operations I've performed over the years
