Having to sue swmbo laptop, good job she is at work.
Any ideas in plain language please.

I know it`s an 'old chestnut' Mike; but, have you shut it down fully and rebooted since it went pear shaped?
Sometimes a 'reboot' can work wonders.....it often does for my Vista machine here :y

power off modem and router and PC then boot in this order:

Hers is working, had to pop out so switched both laptops off. Came back in and switched them on, her came up with download windows update which I did and it connected, got to be something silly on mine.
Internet itself is fine, our desktop is plugged in and connecting fine. :(

I spend hours trying to fix this, swmbo get's in from work had a twiddle and he presto, back on. System Restore :-[ :-[ :-[

Assuming its xp or vista with internet explorer you are using. Open internet explorer, click the tools tab, then internet options, then connections, then lan settings - make sure the automatically detect settings box is checked then click ok and ok. Close internet explorer then re-open and with any luck you should be back in business.
If that doesn't work reset the router and retry these steps.

Just read the post again and see you've fixed this using system restore... sorry!

System Restore
There was a big Microsoft update this week for Windows XP that included an Internet Explorer 7 fix. This might have been updated for Vista users too.
If so, a couple of possibilities (not exclusive) are raised:
1/ The update to Internet Explorer 7 hosed it (IE7).
2/ The update to Internet Explorer 7 worked fine but in doing so changed the program. If you run a software firewall it might be set to block changed programs, resulting in lack of access.
Both these scenarios would be "fixed" by system restore, but your system will be unpatched and therefore potentially unsecured.

Do you run a firewall, Mike?

Did you get the PC sorted Mike?

Do you run a firewall, Mike?
Not sure, windows did an update and it stopped working, I have registery scanner which I run regularly. :)
-
After the update, did any dialog boxes pop up when you first clicked on Internet Explorer?
BTW, I'd check with swmbo and see if she's aware of a firewall.

Try to see what the updates are before you allow it to install them as some are of no use and can cause system probs occasionally with regard to running registry scanner (program) they wont do much good , they only help out when system/pc running slow more likely you may have some adware crap on (you wont know you have it) it just gets on to your pc through surfing websites as they want to know what your viewing etc, there the things that mess your pc up you need to run a program to remove all that as they are a pain in the bum m8, theres a cple of free versions to download to shift it....
