When you woke up in the morning feeling unwell, and you could walk up to the doctors surgery and be seen?
Now you have to sit on the phone from 08:00 in the morning, constantly dialing and getting an engaged tone.
An hour and half later you get through, only to be told all the appointments have been taken for the day, try again in the morning!

The new modern doctors surgery. And when you get through the secretary, phone answer, then says "what's the problem" to which you reply"i will discuss that with a doctor" she then, says "we need to know,so the doctor knows"
is it me ;)

I've got no complaints at all about my local surgery, TBH. I've always got an appointment when I need it with minimal faffing about. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones?

Our local medical centre was taken over by Virgin about a year ago. Within 6 months all the Drs who had been there for ages had left and at the moment it seems to be staffed by locums, although there have been 'assurances' that permanent appointments are in the pipeline. ::)
Maybe it will turn out well in the long term, but I'm not going to hold my breath. :-\

If I'm not fussy who I have an appointment with then I can usually get an appointment in two or three days at my local GPs - once I did manage to get a same-day appointment but that involved watching the online booking thing like a hawk all day until a cancellation came up..
..though I am fussy as some of the GPs are 'orrible ;D
Last time I really needed them, though, I ended up on the phone to 111 instead as there were no non-emergency GP phone consults available that day (and me being me didn't consider being unable to move an emergency :-[ ). 111 ended up sending an ambulance who examined me and ... called the GP to prescribe something to enable me to move again (diazepam, solpadol and naproxen as it turned out). I felt light a right fraud and I'd rather have just been able to get through to the GP in the first place..

Same here, nice new medical centre, result of two local surguries combining. Most of the same doctors too. Depending on the issue, you'll either see a doctor or a nurse. Alternatively the doctor will ring you back within an hour. I have the occasional recurring issue, usually get a repeat prescription without having to leave the house 8)

Occasional.......recurring.......issue? :-\ Does it live in Reading?

Nope, between my ears ;D

Reading? Not surprised. Reading is well dodgy.

Haven't needed to go to the docs for seven years. The chest pains I had a while back were the first hospital visit in almost twenty. However, when I need an appointment for wife/son, I can always get same day. Our surgery is open till nine two days a week, can't remember which days.

No real issues with the Reading surgery. Other than randomly closing for training days, as and when the feel like it.
They all have to comply with latest directive of keeping x amount of appts available for that day. So just turn up.
But a ring back request covers most of my needs, and any prescriptions are now sent direct to the Pharmacy. So I don't even have to go to the surgery at all, mostly.

It's not just about getting to see a GP, it's pretty much the whole system. We're getting to the stage where you probably need to be able to self diagnose.
Wait to see a doctor, if you are lucky
Tell receptionist what the problem is. Is she a doctor ?
Urgent ? Call 999, Ah hang on maybe not. The radio adds say to call 999 if it's urgent, but a different number if it's not. So, let me think, am I dying ? Is that gush of blood urgent enough ?
A & E. With so many now being closed, they are now almost a waste of time and/or so far away that you've had it by the time you get there. As an aside, I recall Andrew Lansley before the last election outside local hospital joining protesters against the closure of the A&E. After the election as Health Secretary he approved it.
Urgent Care Centres ? Again, what is urgent ? Patient needs to decide
However, in some defence. If you ever do visit an A&E or similar it will be packed with pathetic minor ailments, and in London every language under the sun will be there, with the entire family. The workload is phenomenal.
I don't have an answer

I try to avoid doctors like the plague, because it would be hard to find a more dysfunctional bunch of people.
Did you know that the average doctor is SEVEN times more likely to commit suicide than the population in general?.
My mother has had two of her doctors 'top themselves'...........and another one was 'moved elsewhere' because of a narcotics problem.
