Title: Help identifying bulb type
Post by: tunnie on 01 May 2014, 11:26:44
So in GrandmaT's back garden she has a PIR light, the bulb blew, so MotherT took it to a light shop in town. Few days later check up, reply is, 'What bulb?'

Said they never had it  >:(

Quite unusual, hence taking it there. For the sparkies on the forum, anyone know the type of bulb for this PIR light? I can't see a model/name on it. Might need to take it off to see that.

Thanks in advance  :y

Looks like it might take a PAR38 spotlight bulb to me, but might be worth measuring up to see first. :y

Thanks Kevin, quick Google, I don't think it's that looking at it.

It was quite small I think, did not look like a standard bulb.  :-\

That said, could have been that, but most on the ebay search results are screw, I don't remember it being a screw fitting. More like bayonet

Is there a glass lens on the front or does the bulb form a seal against the rubber surround?

Yes glass on the lens, that rotates and comes off. The lens makes the seal  :y

Looks like a standard ES thread  :)

Might be worth paying the extra few quid to buy a replacement LED bulb though and save on the electric bill a little  :)

This should do the job    http://www.ledhut.co.uk/led-bulbs/r63-reflector.html  :)

Ok, then it might be a smaller bulb. I had assumed that the bulb forms the front face of the lamp.

I can see it's an edison screw fitting from here. ;)

If there's a glass face that screws on, as long is it has the right size ES fitting and it fits behind the glass, then job's a good'un. Depending on how the drive electronics is designed, it's possible it'd take exception to an LED or FL low energy bulb.

Humm I took it out myself, did not look like that. It was long and thin.  :-\

I recall it being this style:

But without a connection each side.

Why not post up a pic of old bulb?

Why not post up a pic of old bulb?

Because mother Tunnie took it to an electrical shop and left it there, and they lost it ;)

So I got this:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/sylvania-incandescent-par-38-lamp-es-3100lm-120w/98182?_requestid=231778 (http://www.screwfix.com/p/sylvania-incandescent-par-38-lamp-es-3100lm-120w/98182?_requestid=231778)

The picture is mis-leading, the thread is huge! Looking at the PIR it could be that but the thread/bolt bit needs to be lot smaller. So having a search around rest of their site

You need a bulb with a small edison screw fitting, then (SES). :y

I swapped the halogen (150W) on the garage out for one of those a couple of weeks ago - not quite as bright as the 150W so if that's really important then there are 30W versions that would be brigher than the 150W was, but it's more than enough to make my driveway visible.

And now the neighbourhood cats don't cost me a fortune in leccy.. ;D
