Title: Coolant loss
Post by: ronnyd on 03 May 2014, 00:36:58
I seem to have a slight leak, as level in expansion bottle slowly goes down, no water under car but there is coolant
spray on oil filter and on plastic under tray as well. As said it,s a very slow loss and doesn,t need much fluid to top up.
Any thoughts please. :-\

Usual culprit is HBV, back of engine towards drivers side ;)

Last time I looked under my bonnet, the hbv was on the opposite side of the block to the oil filter ::)

Wrong section or no, I would be replacing the top hose from the thermostat transfer pipe to the rad before it fails completely...

More likely to be the transfer pipe :-\

Either way you need to pressurise the cooling system so you can find the leak with the engine cold.

Have a read of Pressure testing the cooling system  (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90598.0)

True enough... Thorough fix would be thermostat, transfer pipe and top hose all replaced :y

Had system pressure tested today, no anomalies there, hoses checked, almost new. Leak may be coming
from oil cooler so it has been temporally bypassed. Also water pump was changed when cam belt was done
10k ago. will see how it goes. :-\

No loss so far and temp is steady on 85deg on runs and in traffic, just keeping close eye on it at moment.

Last time I changed one it was at the back of engine towards drivers side - drivers side is the opposite side of block to oil filter, but hbv is behind the block under the scuttle, not on the side ;) ::) ::)

Remember the OPs car is a 2.2, not a V6 ::)

Trying to remember a 4 pot engine layout, and what could cause oil filter to get wet...

My recollection is that the oil filter on 2.0 and 2.0 is driver's side. There is a coiling water coil at the top of the oil filter unit on the 2.2. The HBV is at the back of the engine, head level, driver's side, and most easily seen/changed from below. If it is leaking I can see it doing it from below.
