Title: Unlimited 4G Data on O2 anyone - £12pm PAYG.
Post by: zirk on 08 May 2014, 13:36:09
Well 500 mins Unlimited Text and Unlimited 4G Internet to be more precise, all for £12 on Lycamobile UK's Network (O2).

Not tried it myself, so cant comment, kind of thinking wheres the catch?, Tethering, Download speeds, Data Capping?, nothing mentioned on their Website.  :-\

Anyone fancy playing Guinea Pig, £10 for your 1st month, if you order the Free Sim with £12 Credit.

That really is pretty cheap. I pay £10 on O2 for my laptop mobile connection with a 2Gb pm limit.

Catch ? . . . . There's got to be one

I think these are the same people that have small stands at London railways stations with really pushy sales people, not sure.

Catch? Oooh yeah there's a catch

Last I looked at the O2 map...
Catch is, O2 in the UK, currently have the equivalent total 4g coverage of about 4 football fields.

Now on EE for my work phone, they had to fit boosters around the Sky campus as signal was shocking  :o

Had it a few weeks now, usually get 4G in most places. Twickenham station on O2 = GRPS speeds, EE, 4G  8)

So somebody at Sky decided to sign up with EE for your works phones without checking the coverage.   :-X

I suspect they were the cheapest bidder  ::)

They must have known it was rubbish, as days after we started porting to EE, signal boosters went online.  :)

So must have planned ahead.

Can't complain with 4G, work colleague gets faster speeds on 4G than his home broadband  :o  ;D

Rotherham must have been floating on one of those fields lasts then when I got 29.4mb download and 23.46 upload speeds on a test I did which aint bad considering Rotherham isnt actually covered on thier map.

No, I think you'll find its because the coverage is shit! :) not to mention any iphone 5 won't work on O2 4g.

...there's no coverage in Reading. Or Slough. Or Ealing. Or Brentford.

In fact I think you'll find the only place you'll get 4G south of Birmingham, as part of o2's network, is central London. Very very central London.

While it may be a good offer, don't expect 4g to be anything better than very poor.

Most of southern Essex gets 4G on O2

Also got good coverage when I was working in Woolwich, which is definately not Central London

not to mention any original iphone 5 won't work on O2 4g.
Fixed to clarify. Later iPhone 5 models, such as 5S and 5C should work fine.

As for coverage, yes its currently poor on all networks. However, part of the licence agreement is they will provide 98% population coverage with 4G by 2017 (I think that's the right date), following the utter balls-up OFCOM made of the 3G rollout requirements.

Somehow, I get a nagging feeling that O2 would rather pay any penalties than increase coverage outside of Londonium and other large conurbations, based on their lack of willingness to increase their 3G coverage over the past few years (and it's believed that O2 mostly used base units that just needed a firmware update/enablement to provide EDGE and 3G, plus the associated increase in backhaul capacity).

For us poor souls that need near universal coverage for calls, there is no other viable option around these parts :(

That's good news then. :y

Actually, after trying to use the 3G network on O2 whilst out and about south of Bletchley down to the M25 looking for lpg, and along good portions of the m4 between the m25 and Bristol, I hold NO hope that the 4g network will amount to anything even remotely worthwhile.

Unless your in the middle of a built up area with maximum signal 3G is useless currently, and that's been in use for bloody years. Hopeless service for an outdoor MOBILE network. Why would 4g be any better served?
