Not all cars display the engine temperature so I'm not sure how that works. My other car displays fuel level and oil pressure and without going in to the settings it is not clear what temp it is running at.  :-\
Perhaps it's one of those things where if it is displayed it has to work.  :-\

Take the car elsewhere ...
Not a testable item, as it's not among the failure codes within the tester's manual :o

Be interesting to see the 'Refusal' certificate though. Can you scan/post-up?

Is that the case or where they using it as an excuse not to do the emissions test (as the engine has to be upto temp to do this)

Diesel or petrol might also have a bearing on that too...

Taken from a SEAT forum:

Hello,

Just looking through my past few emission test reports and i noted on them that it says "Temperature gauge shows normal temp".

Yep. Just phoned my local kwik fit and his first question was 'petrol or diesel?' Diesel can be failed apparently.

Summat to do with the engine being upto temp and cambelt being servicable prior to them revving the living daylights out of it for the smoke test iirc :-\

Are Thick Fit Twitters so dumb now that they need a temperature gauge to know when an engine's hot? ;D

There is a code on the failure note, look it up.

Three things for an mot emissions test 1. temp gauge shows normal operating temp. 2. coolant pipes were hot. 3. cooling fan cut in.
that's it, its not very likely that all three were not working and I do this every day so would go back and ask for a retest foc or a form to complain to vosa/dvsa :y

Car is 1600 petrol. Spoke to my MOT man today and he said if temp guage not working, tester was being lazy and not putting the prob down the dipstick tube that is part of the kit for cases like this. Spoke to mate, he got a call from bloke he has known there for over twenty years, asked to go back in and got an MOT done that way. Young t0$$er been given a talking to
