Title: Cruise question
Post by: Tony H on 15 June 2008, 20:30:55
Good evening everyone out there :). Can anyone tell me if the cruise control applies the brakes when driving down an incline to maintain the set cruise speed? or is it my imagination  :-/because it certainly feels like it. If it is the case wouldn't you have thought VX would have provided and overide button to maximize fuel economy?

I'm not aware that cruise can apply the brakes on Omega's.

Do it doesn't, all it does is shut the throttle off to apply engine breaking.....and if the revs are high enough (and the slush box is locked up) the fuel injector cutoff will kick in and you will get the magic 999.9 mpg on the computer.

As far as I know, the cruise control only removes the the throttle and has nothing to do with the brakes.

Omega cruise, as others said, does not brake, unlike a handful of newer implementations

It doesn't feel like engine braking there seems to be a definate sharpish deceleration  :-/, like you'd get just touching the brakes. :-/

As others have said.........no it doesnt........tho a 735i bmw i used to have did brake i reckon......or it was very good at engine braking to hold the set cruise speed down some pretty steep hills.......

What i find bloody annoying tho........is with no crusie set and going down hill.....its coasting nicely....say 30mph and pretty constant....you havent touched the brakes or have your foot on the gas pedal.....and it decides to drop down a gear for engine braking.......WHY???

It means that you have to give it some gas to maintain your speed  :-?

With out the cruise on I have noticed both of my cars tend to brake on hills, the first time I notice it most is in a 30mph on a certain incline and I allways thought it had just dropped down a gear which felt like the engine was braking.  (you can get the same effect by flicking the sport mode on. )

My 2.5 V6 can feel like it`s being braked by the cruise if the fuel cut-off 'kicks-in' on a long downhill.....as the guys observe, it can really feel like the cruise is working the brakes at such times. ;)

And how is that related to the cruise problem?
