Title: Head gasket changed today
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 14 June 2008, 22:27:07
Some may know I bought Tunnie's T reg 2.0 16v Estate Manual, with HG failure. We didn't have a clue about the history of this car, it wouldn't run, was full of sludge, and had almost no compression on two cylinders, but we took our chance.

Thankfully, it paid off. Markie and myself stripped the top end down in about 90 minutes and got the head off it - quick sausage roll (cheers mother tunnie!) and cleaned it up. Then TheBoy turned up, and we all started the reassembly. Got it all back together, and it's now running very sweetly indeed.

Needs a few quick oil changes but nothing to worry about.

We all took it for a test drive - couldn't really give it some beans though, until we cleaned the windscreen ;D

Test drive went fine - once it burnt off the clouds of oil smoke (I spilt some in a plug well!) - pulls and drives well (for a 4 pot) and the manual box is very good.

Only slight problem is a leaky HBV - which'll be done next weekend, along with the leather, Elite wheels and cruise upgrades.

Thanks to Mrs/Mr Tunnie for putting up with us and supplying neverending tea etc... to Markie for working on it all day with me, and to TB, for providing further assistance and company (Eg, cheers for coming and taking the P1$$ all day, Jaime ;D )

Oh, and thanks too to TB, for the "Climate Modification" with the Tech2. I must  be the only person in the country whose climate can go to 74 degrees ;D ;D

Ah yes, waterpump felt nasty. It's having a cambelt kit, water pump and aux belt, before it's let loose on the road :)

some nice work there Kevin, will be interesting to see your injector timings as a result of getting it that close to the petrol injectors.

Any chance of some pics of the other side of the manifold?

Here you go:

Grind a little flat to drill the hole
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1986.jpg)
Start small and open it out
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1987.jpg)
Hole drilled
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1988.jpg)
A bit of cutting paste on the tap
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1989.jpg)
.. and thread the hole
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1990.jpg)
Grind the area around the top of the nozzle to allow it to seat
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1991.jpg)
A little thread lock on the nozzle
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1992.jpg)
Screw the nozzle in, using a suitably sized allen key to align it with the thread
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1993.jpg)
Nozzle in place
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1994.jpg)
Grid the area around the nozzle smooth
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w63/kjwood/IMGP1995.jpg)
Top side of manifold.

That was my (only) manifold. I might have been a bit more adventurous with a spare.

No problem with doing them if anyone needs one although it's easier than it looks.
