Title: double glazing cost?
Post by: redelitev6 on 22 May 2014, 20:54:02
:( After nearly 20 years our UPVC double glazing is showing its age, so the time has come to think about renewing it ,does anybody have any idea about replacement costs ? looking at 8 decent sized windows including a bay

Just had mine all done, 7 windows, composite front door, bottom half bricked up at front and plastered.
all A rated, them posh locks on all windows, all fitted in 2 days.
worst part of whole job was it took 12 weeks from order to being fitted, so ask them how long from order to fitting.
others will say i was robbed, could have got it cheaper from elsewere, but i don't give a break,my money my choice.
but ask others in your area who they used, and get 3to 4 quotes, then haggle on the price, stay away from all the large multi-nationals, eg safestyle, anglia etc, they both quoted me £8500. :D..
so do your homework. :y

If its just the units fogging or steaming up then you can just get them  :y :y

Had mine done a couple of years ago.....£400/window.... A rated....couple of them had security glass in them....one of the upstairs windows had 'escape' windows fitted.

Bear in mind that a bay window counts as 3 windows (if not 5, depending on 'sides' to it)  :y

Just had a price of £5300 for 8 windows (inc bay ) and 4 windows need steel lintels in as only a brick soldier course above , seems a decent price?

I paid £6500 for 12 windows & 2 doors (one set patio doors) four years ago, so that's probably not far off considering inflation n'all that..

When dealing with double glazing salesmen, remember that they would sell their grandmother into slavery if they thought it would get them a sale.

So haggle. Hard. Then insist they go away so you can think about it. When they contact you, haggle some more. If doing the whole house, expect to at least halve the original quote. Doors are where the cost is, casement windows are simple and cheap, bays are a bit more work.

But what is actually wrong with the OP's existing windows? 20 years shouldn't affect decent uPVC frames; thorough cleaning and some simple maintenance on the stays, hinges etc should sort them out for a few quid. The most I'd expect to do would be to change any blown sealed units, which is a quick, cheap and easy job.
