Steady progress is being made on making these a reality with California bring the latest state to issue licences for them from September. I suspect by 2020 they will be in production and by 2030 will be our normal mode of travel. This is going to have a profound effect on society with driverless commercial vehicles and taxis. Google with their large search and knowledge base will have no problem in replacing the taxi driver conversations. And another Google fact.... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nissan have a working prototype of a Leaf that will not just self-park, but drop you off at the front door of the supermarket, and it will drive around the car park looking for a space. When ready, you tell it to come and pick you up at the front door! :o

Can't be any worse than some of the cars that I come across WITH driver input on my daily commute. ;D

Nah. It won't work. Remember the Jetsons? Never happened, did it?

Sadly, yes. :-\
They already have the technology so it's only a matter of time before driverless cars are commonplace.
2020 sounds about right.

For people who can't drive (women) driverless cars will be much appreciated.
No more sitting next to the 'great unwashed' on the bus/tube...etc..etc.... :y

Making a car 'drive' without a driver is easy. Getting it to do so reliably and safely with all the unpredictable, hard to allow for stuff that goes on all around is next to impossible. Now multiply that by all the cars on the roads. We don't allow trains without drivers, and they are in a much more suitable environment.
Without a massive change in the way we use them, driverless cars are a long way off.
