Title: Citroen C5
Post by: Kate on 25 May 2014, 21:27:26
Hi all.

I got some rent money back and was thinking about getting a second, more economical car for a while.

Has anyone got any experience of the Citroen C5 diesel? They seem quite cheap to buy.

Thanks. :y

Not a bad drive,engine/gearbox hard as nails, lots of electronics though and that's where the problems will come from :-\

Cheap to buy, nice to be in, horrible to own.
That's what Citroen means.

In the last month or so I have been stuck behind 3 Citroens, all 57 plate or newer. All with the rear lights exhibiting odd behaviour when the indicator was being used. I sat there wondering how expensive it would be to put that right. Maybe it is just a coincidence that they were all Citroens or perhaps it is a sign.

Intermittent/constant/serious/trivial/electrical problems and the bills that go with them. Which is a shame, because when a hydraulically suspended Citroen is working properly, it makes you wonder why all cars aren't built like that.

Oh that's a bad sign. Electrics can be a nightmare. I even had electrical problems with my Morris Minor once. :o

if you get hdi
then you have long list of things to go wrong and then its not so cheap to run
maybe more expansive then omega petrol

I've got an 02 plate HDi. Big comfy old bus but bland, I have no enthusiasm for it what so ever. I've put calipers on a few of them, seems to be a common weakness, the fronts have the handbrake which seizes up and the rears just dissolve! And another stupid french quirk, the wheels have no hole in the centre so they won't go on a normal balancing machine. But it is economical and comfy.

He probably figured that if it could manage that mileage without blowing up, then it might last forever ;D

Pugs of that era don't rot away like earlier stuff :y

I'll third the 406.  :y  I bought one in the auctions as a workhorse, used and abused it for 6 months and then sold it on to a builder who 2 years on is doing much the same with it!  :y

Go back to an infinitely repairable Morris Minor/Traveller, Kate - no Road Tax if old enough and you can mend most things with a hammer!

Aaaah, lovely!
Timing CHAIN, perfectly lubricated and tensioned with a Reynolds slipper tensioner - lasted forever, unlike our cambelts. I once changed the big end shells and piston rings the day before going on holiday up North (bravery on the part of a Southerner!).
The only really awkward job was changing the thermostat bypass hose, but after hearing about the "bastard bolt" from on here, it was a doddle!

Mini bypass hose is really awkward? Why not loosen the 4 bolts holding the waterpump in place and make it easy? And use a kevlar hose so it won't be a problem again.

My sons girlfriend has a C5 HDI and has had on and off problems with the Diesel Particulate Filter, (DPF) due to
doing mostly short journeys to and from work. Also some niggles with electrics and dash warning lights as well.
Good comfy ride but seems a disaster waiting to happen, and it,s FRENCH. :'(
