Title: Google planning to have driverless cars on the road within 2 years
Post by: Rods2 on 28 May 2014, 14:13:17
The cars will have no steering wheel, throttle or brake pedal as they don't need them.

Google driverless cars have be successfully running on public roads for over 2 years now. The next phase is 100 prototypes on the road within 12 months, before they look at full scale production. For the skeptics on here going on about it will never happen, it will and sooner than you think.

There are too many safety advantages and cost savings to be made for it not to happen.

I agree, Mr Rods.

Teleportation, Star Trek style, would be better though. I'm working on it as we speak. :)

I understand how driverless cars would interact with other driverless cars, and because of this there should be fewer accidents.

However, how does a driverless car respond when confronted by a 'pissed up jock' in a stolen JCB?

Just asking. :y

I only hope the mapping and GPS is more reliable than our trackers at work. Given that every now and again I am shown to have taken a trip to the South of France, or, memorably, the middle of the Aegean Sea... I'd love to do that on work time but I think it would count as gross misconduct...

I hope so too; apparently I was doing 300mph through Sittingbourne the other day.

What the OP's linked article is actually about is a proof of concept experiment with very limited parameters. It doesn't mean that Ford will turn out 2.5 million of the things in 2017.

It will happen.

History will of course record the name of the first person to be killed by a driverless car.
