Well, a Mexico is actually a twin-cam with a 1600 Cortina engine, and so uses a lot of bits that weren't on ordinary Escorts. RS2000s are more of a decent spec Escort with a Cortina engine.
And the price? A mate has just sold one of his mk1s, that he took off the road 23 years ago and started fitting a Starion engine and gearbox to. It looks quite tidy from the outside, but has the tunnel cut out, and a couple of crudely fitted floorpans(I can own up to that, the first time I'd done that sort of work). He got £4700 for it, so a good, genuine £20k Mexico with a fresh Harris engine doesn't seem too outrageous to me.

Wow, So many possibilities and a Ford Escort for 20k wouldn't be one of them.. a VXR8 comes to mind though.. But if it has to be a classic it's an easy choice Lotus Carlton :y

That's about right. A mate had his Mexico burned out on the M1 and the insurance company offered him 21k cash or 20k plus the remains of the car. Don't forget, a Mexico is no ordinary mk1 Escort - there is very little changed from the actual rally car that it inherits its name from. They're quite special. Also, classic Ford prices are generally much higher than most other marques in the same class.

Indeed, if the Escort had the BDA twin cam engine, or one of its' successors in the series, then £20K for the engine alone probably wouldn't be considered outrageous by some if it was freshly rebuilt. :o

Why were they so pleased they didn't take the cash offer of £37k before the auction for the delorean (hideous) when the hammer price was £40k which after commission and vat was surely less than the pre-auction cash offer.

With the UK £375bn on QE and the US with over $3tn all this money has to go somewhere, which is why there are bubbles forming in London property, UK, US shares and many collectables. With US tapering already leading to gradual market corrections and China heading for a possible dept induced hard landing, I'm sure many collectors are going to be nursing losses in the not too distant future. ??? ??? ???

I have to go against the grain and say I quite enjoyed this series.. I'm impressed how much they sold for, too, though I wonder how many of the buyers were found by the production company!
So, who wants to hunt down a knackered Mexico with me and sell it on for a huge profit? Or a DeLorean.. ok maybe not the latter, I'd be too tempted to keep it (I know, I know, it's a woeful car but..)
Did anyone notice the Dax trailer outside when Phil wotsit was draped over the Mini in the workshop? Apparently Dax are entering into some partnership with Evanta cars (run by Ant, the other one on the show) to produce replicas of some form..

Anything remotely Escort Mk 1/2 shaped costs a ruddy fortune these days, unfortunately. Even if the only thing that hasn't rotted away is the log book!
The trick is to pick the classics of tomorrow. I suppose a De Lorean would have been a good bet at one time. I wonder if you could fit a X30XE in place of that godawful French donk? ::)

It's a Colin Chapman chassis. 5 BHP more and it'll fall apart horribly!

Most things become a classic at some point in time, I have had many that go for considerable sums now, that were simply bangers in my younger days........
I do remember thinking, in the early 80's about getting a nice Ford Escort and putting it away, sadly I neither had the space or the funds to do such a thing, it would have been a good investment is seems........ ::) ::)
