Title: Is the gearbox dead ?
Post by: Andyv6 on 08 June 2014, 18:35:38
Had a call from my old man saying he thinks his autobox may have died he said it was thudding into gear and sometimes a delay going into gear warning on the dash and a burning smell, had a look when I popped home 2 fault codes one was to do with temp voltage to high and the other I think was speed signal iirc (forgot to note them down) but codes erased ok jacked it up pulled the level plug out (without car running) v slight dribble of oil, so guessing it was low and oil smells burnt and looks a bit odd kinda looks like rusty oil imagine you have a seized padlock and been spraying wd40 at it then as it frees off you get a rusty looking oil weeping out of it. Now do you guys think with a oil and filter change and some flushing with new oil the box may live again ? As up to yet only found 1 af35 box on eBay, oh cars a 98 elite 3.0l and getting on for 230k on the clock. Thanks in advance Andy

Got to be worth a try draining the current remaining fluid out and refilling with fresh. Obviously you'll have to drop the sumps so a good inspection of the filter might tell you the state of the box.

Personally I wouldn't put expensive Dex III in as something like Fuchs Titan 4000 isn't cheap if you subsequently find that the box is toast you'll have wasted a lot of money...

Level must be checked car level/engine running :y anything else is just guessing, but a fluid/filter change cannot hurt, and whilst the sumps are off, you can check for debris :y

No not dead. No mention of slipping. I reckon changing for new Dex 3 will sort it.

Vx probably won't stock Dex 3 and try to sell you the latest more expensive Dex oil.

Stick to Dex 3 but try to avoid that poxy coma shite IMO. Any Dex 3 will do in theory although Fuchs Titan dex3 is often used here if available to you.

Probably due on mine by now, going by the 60k interval i prefer.

Filter can be washed out btw.

If nothing came out with the engine stopped then it's seriously low on fluid.  :y

Well I got round to pulling the sumps off and it don't look good small chunks of friction material in the front sump and larger pieces in the bigger sump looked up in the box above the valve body and can see more bits hanging from the centre of the box,  :'( anyone got any idea of the cost to get repaired or would it be Easier to get a 2nd hand box.

Well I've been a busy boy of recent and not had chance to say thanks for the advice and also a big thank you to Steve at http://www.omegaspareparts.com for supplying me with another auto box pulled the sumps off changed the filter and sump gaskets all nice and clean inside, box fitted and runs like a dream  :y :y :y
Also changed the rear main seal as the box was out and it was weeping a bit, just gotta do cam belt and lower ball joints as soon as it's back from the body shop to have some dinks and rust taken care of.
