As per the title.
Driving to work this morning, at 6:30am, driving at the national speed limit on a quiet A Road. From nowhere, a big deer jumped directly in front of my Omega, leaving me little reaction time. Obviously I hammered on the brakes and the ABS did me proud on an icy morning, I also swerved to avoid it, but unfortunately despite these efforts, we collided.
I never realised how much of a mess they can make of your car :(
-
Sorry to hear that :(
Hope your ok tho :-?
-
Thanks mate. I really gotta get this 2.0 running now :'(

I worked in a garage years ago whilst serving my time...the owner of the garage had a mate who drove a Merc(think it was a 230D) the old W123 Merc's
now this thing was a tank!! especially with the diesel engine in it.....
He came round a bend on a country road...he said he was doing about 20/25 mph because of the blind bend.... to be met with a cow!!
20 mph and it destroyed the Merc...and i mean destroyed it!! right up to the windscreen which smashed and there was a kink in the roof..they had to get a hi-ab to lift it cause it wouldn't go on a flatbed or spec lift....both front wheel were bent.... bottom edge up...flat on the road :o
When the hi-ab lifted it the engine remained on the road!!! the weight of the cow plus the impact had sheared the engine mounts totally off the car (dont know how bad they old thing was for corrosion) but even still...it was about 12 years ago so it wasn't ancient at the time!
What a mess...it took 4 hours to get the thing off the road and on the truck!
The farmer wasn't best pleased, but couldn't say much as his fence was burst
The rather sad thing about it was the farmer tied a rope around, the now deceased cow,and towed it and i mean dragged it up the road back to his farm :o
the driver of the Merc was quite hurt, but recovered after a week or so!!
I reckon it was just as well he was driving the big Merctank!! anything smaller and i think he would have been killed :o

Happened to my son once, wrote his car off.
Glad your OK.

James,
What a bit of bad luck!
Did you keep the deer? Venison would be very nice for Christmas.
If you miss working on a V6 you can always work on mine

The police called out someone to dispose of the deer
To be honest, I was too shocked and upset at all the blood etc to really give it a thought, but I don't think I'd have kept it anyway.
I was a bit disappointed in the police - I called them simply because It was creating an obstruction on a major road, however when they got there, rather than tend to that, all they were interested in was breathalising me, checking my tyre tread depths, checking out my insurance and tax on the database etc... I felt like they were trying to get me for something!! Thankfully they could not.

Surely not! :o The potential of an arrest without any leg work, and even phoned them! :o
:-X :-X :-X

Straight up matey. I wasn't carrying my licence at the time so I've even got a producer for 7 days to take all my driving documents to the station!!
-
At least you are OK

Sorry mate, standard practice for anyone involved in an RTC. Even if you go into the Police Station to report it you still have to produce your documents. If you don't have them then you will get a 7 day producer.

Sorry to hear that m8 glad your ok tho
-
Glad your OK… Last week I went off the M40 at junction 4 at night and on the slip road I had to swerve to avoid a deer that was just standing there looking me… luckily he was looking straight at me, their eyes sort of glow in the headlight, so I saw the eyes before the rest of the animal (their brownish colour does not help making them visible at night).

My poor mechanic hit a deer at around 60mph. Trouble is, he was on his bike... ...taken to A&E in back of ice cream van with blue flashing lights....

Sorry to hear of your bad luck how much damage was done to your V6 would you say its fixable or a right off.
Good to hear you are ok and only abit shocked.
-
You've got my sympathy there mate, but glad to hear you're ok. My journey to and from work takes me through parts of Hatfield Forest and deer are always running out on the road. I've seen quite a few of them hit by cars over the years and they certainly make a mess of them.
-
Sad news James.
Last time I saw a deer it was eating grass at the side of the M6. First and only time I've called 999.
An Omega may only be a 3* NCAP but the point is you walked away - unlike the stupid deer :-[
-
The Omega is built like a tank, and the metal re-inforcer behind the bumper is like an RSJ - there is not mega damage to the car. It needs a new wing, and a few bits, but it's do-able.
Re. the law re. the RTC - having checked it out purely out of interest, the breath test+producer is apparently only policy when you hit something such as another car, a person, or someone's property = it doesn't apply to simply hitting a wild animal!!

Sounds to me like you may have a reason for a complaint against the police for how you were treated.

There's also a law that makes it an offence for you take the deer to the butchers - but the car behind can without issue. So getting a producer seems par for the course. :-?

Unlikely you would have a claim against a Police Officer doing their job correctly!
Whilst the road traffic act defines a "reportable accident" as being what you have described, the term "accident" is much looser and could be interpreted to include your unlucky experience. The point is "Would an ordinary person describe it as an accident". The courts have deliberately not defined "accident" to cover all eventualities.
It is perfectly acceptable to issue a producer and inspect tyres on a car merely for its prescence on the road, no accident required.
Anyway, as long as you produce your documens then everything is all ok.
Glad to hear it is not too badly damaged
