Title: tractor sump plug query.
Post by: conalnugent on 24 June 2014, 10:43:49
Service due and ive never had the sump plug out before, have always used the oil sucker via dip stick pump.

I hear the screwing out/replacing can be an issue.  Before I do anything is it standard thread in the plug?  As in lefty loosey??

Also will there be a o ring or the likes will need replaced? ?

The sumps on 2.5TD,s can be very soft, so thread stripping can occur.. I fitted a stalbus oil drain plug to mine so you don't have to remove it any more

All standard, other than the sump is made of typical BMW monkey metal. Its desperately easy to strip. Desperately easy.

Both TD engines I had had stripped sumps, and tapping the thread to a slightly larger size soon stripped again.

Marks DTM helicoiled mine, and fitted one of those quickdrain taps, that sadly didn't survive the first good thrashing down a country lane, but the helicoil lasted that incident and everything I threw at it afterwards.

I'd seriously consider helicoilling it.

Continue using one ... is my advice ;)

I use a 7-litre version:

Gets all the oil out on a TD ... trust me! 8)

What's helicoiling and how much would a cheap sucker cost?     3---  :-* lol

Got mine for 50-odd quid from Amazon. Paid for itself now.
Remember that the TD's sump capacity is 6.5 litres ;)

I'm not a fan of oil pumps, esp on engines that are known to create a bit of the black death, like the beemer straight 6 diesel.

Can you post a link to this helicoil / drain plug?  Id be very interested in doing this. Ps biting the bullet and calling with a friend tomorrow to use his "oil extraction pump"

job done. Went to my old buddy and threw it up on the ramp.  Took the gamble and took the bung out and yes it wrecked the treads.  Quick dunt with a drill and a tap and that was it sorted.  Defo feels ALOT more responsive than before, going to drive the new oil 1000 mile then change oil and filter again but for the good stuff to give her a proper clean out.

PS have a fuel filter sitting here, whats the diesel magic trick ive heard of? i know you fill the new fuel filter with something then put it on but what is it you use??

Cheers.

It is exactly that!! Called Diesel magic made by Comma ,you can get it in Halfords or many motor factors.
Fill new filter with it on a preferably warm engine and fire her up then run it for a few mins giving it a few revs (Some say hold it at about half revs) Cleans all the crud out and if you have had the management light flicking on and off usually cures it after a couple of times.

Good news, but it will go again.  Next time your mate is available, pop one of these in

Helical insert, usually called helicoil.
