Mate at work has one of these. 54 plate Tdi.
He has had it recovered to me after a breakdown
Symptoms, he described a noise like a hamster in a ball. He said it got worse and he turned off the engine.
I've had a very brief look and have determines -
Cam-belt intact and in good shape
No holes in block
Oil level full
No warning lights came on inc no oil pressure lights
Any thoughts? I'm wondering if the dual mass flywheel has failed and somehow is jamming the crank?
-
The crank is jammed. Cannot turn it by hand.
-
If you want a proper term for that they say.... Its f####d ;D
-
Mileage? Cams can fail (wear out) due to Vws bullshit service intervals... Those engines don't rebuild well IMHO :-\
-
Chain driven oil pump from memory on the Pd,could be that thats let go :-\
-
I thought it was only a chain pump on the 2.0? (could be wrong though)
-
this is the engine with a known history of oil pump failure isnt it? seen a couple here similar noise problems, was bottom end dying :-\
-
lets make this clear, what engine is in car 1.9 or 2.0 ?
-

Could be,I know the 3 pot 1400 pd has one, I thought the 1.9 was similar ???

1.9 have chain on oil pump but they use different sprockets and they dont wear like on 2.0
thats what conversion I done few times

this on early 2.0 tdi
-
It's the 1.9
I reckon its a flywheel issue. He described the noise as worse in high gears before it died, with difficulty engaging third...
-
Mileage ::)
Worse in higher gears doesn't automatically mean a drivetrain problem... as the gears go up, the revs drop, so the engine is producing less torque and is relatively less stressed.
When the flywheel gave up on my Seat, same engine you could feel a definite roughness through the clutch pedal.
Cams can erode from as little as 120k if the car hasn't been regularly serviced...
-
70k and full audi history...
-
Started making preps for engine removal today. All the things like air box, battery tray.
Took the starter motor out and found a not insignificant amount of swarf in the bellhousing.
Had a poke with my fingers and retrieved a couple of chewed up bits of metal.
Almost certain the flywheel has fallen to bits and is jammed into the bell house...
-
As per above post...
Flywheel fell to bits and jammed into bell housing.
Engine now turns freely :y

Christ :o,thats not good is it ???

That must have been banging and knocking for ages with the usual multi clonk on start-up and rattle with clutch pressed that you get on a very bad DMF failure
-
Only 70k too :o

Now you have me wondering if that's the noise the M3 is making... would that rattle sound at all like a tiny jackhammer somewhere under the car? Goes away as soon as the pressure plate starts making contact with the flywheel?
-
Yes, other classic sign is start it up with the clutch pressed, do you get a short rattle then?
-
I'm a BMW driver so I'm naturally lazy - the computer takes care of that third pedal business.. ;)
It's an SMG-II so I can make it dis/engage the clutch when started, but I don't know if it starts with the clutch depressed or not.. actually thinking about it the diagnostics tells me the position of the actuator so I can probably check that (and actuate it if it's not already) when starting :y I'll give that a try at the weekend

Good call James. :y :y :y

New flywheel and clutch kit fitted. Getting the box on single handedly was a struggle I'm shattered. A few bits to do before she can be driven, but she starts and idles lovely :y just thrilled it's not seized :y

Is it a six speeder ?,if so they are bloody heavy, gears must be made of lead :-\
-
I recon the FWD VW diesel is the worst car out there for changing the clutch on, even worse with a DSG

I don't actually know, I've just been putting it back together like a big Lego set ;D

Makes me feel better for doing it :D what would you say is bad about it?
Can't be any worse than likes of Mondeo where the subframe is in the way?
-
Its heavy and a shitter to align.

At least you didnt have to cut the centre out to get at the flywheel bolts! stupid things.

Yet another time where a plasma cutter makes life SO easy :y ;D

Probably quite handy for getting the gearbox out too ;D
