Title: It's a Mugs Game!
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 02 July 2014, 13:32:16
Gambling that is!  ::)

I don't generally gamble because I usually lose my money, but just for fun I put a fiver on an accumulator bet for the winners of the last 16 matches in the World Cup.  So over the last few days as my selections have all won I've been getting quite excited and was on the edge of my seat watching Belgium v USA, as Belgium was my last pick on the accumulator and I stood to win about £300!  :y

So Belgium won, Happy Days thought I, as I cheerfully went into Ladbrokes to collect my winnings, only to be brought down to earth with a thump when the guy said the matches had to be won in normal time (90 mins) for the bet to be valid!  >:(

Mug? Me? Yes!  ::)

Bookies. Somewhere down there with insurance companies and estate agents. ::)

That said, I have won a fortune gambling myself.. by never having done it. ;D

Bookies?

Never been in one in my life, wouldn't know what to do. Its on my Hit List before I leave this Planet!

1. Take a Free trip on the Woolwich Ferry.
2. Place a Bet in a Bookies.
3. Stuff some Coke up the nostrils.
4. Go back to Hong Hong and find that toe rag that ripped me off for a load of Lappy Batteries.

Yes I've looked at the T&C's on the website and it says that games in knockout competitions have to be won in normal time.  However, there's nothing obvious in the shop to make you aware of this, nor was it pointed out when I placed the bet.  >:(

How many games have gone to extra time or penalties?.......quite a lot. This gives the bookies even more of an advantage as you have just found out..... :-\ :-\

A win should be a win regardless of extra time or penalties. Fooking crooks. >:( >:( >:(

My Dad used to say that you never see a poor bookie !

I have a bee in my bonnet about gambling, I'm not completely against it, I do the lottery a bit, I've played roulette and Blackjack (badly) in Vegas and Monaco, but I've always controlled it I've won and I've lost and I've always walked away, never good money after bad.

My concern is the profileration of advertising by gaming/gambling companies. Websites, TV, everywhere, are adverts encouraging gambling in some form or another. If a company advertises it is because they make money out of it. If they make money, then it stands to reason that the punter loses money. I just find this ethically wrong and yet it recent years it has boomed, and the most likely victims are those who can least afford it.

Rant over . . . . .  ;)

Easy money for a bookie then as I don't ever recall a world cup where at least one match went to extra time in the first round of the knock out stages.

So basically, I bet you could never win (or one that should have had stupidly long odds)

Yep all bets on football are generally 90 mins  :'(

This is fine for premiership games that always run to ninety minutes. However, the bookies/crooks are well aware that most/many world cup games go to extra time. :-\ :-\

Hanging is too good for them..... :D :D ;D

In my opinion it is generally the poorest members of society who bet the most and therefore lose the lost.

Such people are so lucky that benevolent help is at hand in the form of Wonga and the like...... ::) ::) ::) ;)

These  good samaritans of the financial world lend money to the impoverished and the needy when no one else will.....and at reasonable rates of interest too.  ::) ::) ;D ;D

Perhaps Wonga and Quickquid should be given the same staus as charity shops.......... :)
