On the way back from Bournemouth (260 mile journey) yesterday a message came up on 3 separate occasions - 'check oil level'. The 1st and 2nd time I did and everything was okay and the 3rd time I just ignored it. Any ideas anyone? :-*

It's set wrongly in my opinion: if the oil level is any lower than the full mark on the dipstick, the warning comes on during motorway runs. Which means you learn to ignore it, making it unfit for its purpose.

Its not uncommon if the oil level is midway between the MIN and MAX mark on a cruise. Try to keep it nearer MAX.
If its happening nearer the MAX mark, as Nick W's is, consider replacing the oil level sensor :)

Thanks for that chaps. This has never happened before but then again never really done the kind of mileage I did last week. It recently had an oil change as well but I'm sure the mechanic (who I trust implicitly) will have done the job correctly. He is very experienced and works on a lot of high performance vehicles on a regular basis so I'm sure it's nothing to do with that. 8)

You may find "your trusted mechanic" replaced filter then added new oil to bring it to level then sent car out.Filter holds around 0.5 litre so may of been on the low side anyway on your travels.
Level ground and check oil and as said bring it up to the top mark on dispstick.Warning does seem to be quite sensitive to even a small drop from being at the full mark though on the 3 I have owned too

Not sure about that as I was stood with him while he did it and after running the engine and doing some other little jobs he topped it up before I drove away. I'll have a word with him and let everyone know (for anyone who might be interested) of the outcome. :y

My old Elite would flash up the low warning if dipstick level fell by even a few mm so imagine they are just very sensitive.
Newer Elite hasn,t done it once...well yet ..and 11k into my ownership but in fairness car hasn,t drop even a few mm between oil changes which I have become slightly obsessive with now at every 2.5k but as all nice and quite will push that out to 5k now

Mine comes on about a third from the lower level on a cruise down the motorway. Just a reminder to check it. No biggy.
...provided you know where on the dipstick the warning comes on of course. But now you do. :y

The message to 'check my oil level the next time I fill with fuel' comes up on my Merc every 100 yds ..... well - it seems like it, & that when the level is half way up the dip stick & virtually at the top! ??? I new level sensor is on the cards I think :-\
