Is bad for you they tell us. Too much in the diet. Eat less salt, cut back etc etc.
Family member been suffering exhaustion type symptoms after exercise in hot conditions. After golf in Spain mostly. Usually after a good glug of water.
Looks like it could be lack of salt, as he's been cutting back , looks likely.
Anyone familiar with the symptoms of low salt levels? I remember them handing out salt tablets in it ain't of hot marm. ;D

it is not the salt that is the bad bit..it is sodium that gets you...lack of salt in your body can cause a myriad of problems including cramps

When I was ickle, we lived in warmer climbs, and had to take "salt tablets". No idea if they were just salt, or specially medicated.
It obviously stuck, as I remember every time we went on hols to hot places, mum always took the salt tablets (and the sterilising tablets - remember them ;D)

The point being, it seems it was normal to take some kind of salt compliment in hot climates.

salt is necessary.. and also some other electrolytes

It has been 40 degC here in the shade these last two days and 24 min at night (about 6 in morning).
You just cannot drink enough unless you have a glass every half hour. It is no use trying to catch up later in the day. It doesn't work. Salt? Well you have snacks with drinks and salt on your tomatoes, sardines, BBQ chicken....... ;D ;D

Indeed. One of his clients happens to be a heart specialist. So gave him a ring, seeing as the entire health service system is convinced that's the cause. They, in the health service, can see something is wrong, but don't know what. He's had all the heart tests. Usual stuff, look for the worst possible first, then the next worst and so on, to a point that if its not considered life threatening, punt him out in the street or make him pay private for further treatment.
Anyway. Heart specialist suggests, after listening to the symptoms, either a spasm, which was discounted, or Salt deficiency.
Yet the he's been through the entire nhs without mention of either. ::)
Time will tell, but looks promising so far. :)

As mum is sat beside me, I asked her. Back in the 60s and 70s salt tablets were common for those stationed in hot weather, as you need more salt in the heat. However, they were mostly phased out after a number of deaths where the autopsy showed I dissolved salt in the system, with a recommendation to use more natural methods of boosting salt intake.

Too much = bad
Not enough = Bad
Today, too much salt is added to cheap foods to make them taste good so that they sell more. It really is that simple, and that's the problem.
These cheap foods often also have high fat content, so that they taste good so that they sell more.
It is also a form of natural selection. people who are too thick to understand the above, get overweight, get vascular/cardiac disease, and die younger therefore stengthening the gene pool for the future :y

Quite correct, certainly in the RAF in the 50's and 60's there were bowls of salt tablets on tables in the mess at meal times in hot climes. I did notice their absence by the late 60's though. :y :y :y

Possibly. But if they start on the high salt - high fat foods early enough (which many youngster are certainly doing) then the peripheral vascular disease will cause erectile dysfunction which means . . . . no procreation :y :y
