Hi ya,
As above just about to order arches (total cost for both). i dont know the width of the new arches. but if my rust exceeds the width will i be able to ''fusge'' it with some spare steel welded in between?
Was going to do the filler thing that nick mentioned but these are so cheap (£50 each) it would save me a lot of hassel with shaping the filler.
-
If the repair is a good fit(and that's not always a given with bought panels), there will still be some distortion from the welding and grinding. So,you will still need some filler to hide the join.
For that sort of money, I reckon you'd be better having a go at making your own.

ok mate. i just assumed that would be too good of a price to pass up :-\
Thanks for the advice.
in terms of making my own.... to keep it simple.... should i cut out the rough shape of the arch as you look at it (slightly undersized to allow for filler ''shaping'') and then an under carriage piece and then a inside 'side' panel/ weld all that in, lob some filler on and if i make a mess up of the filler get the guy at the body shop to get the original shape back for me?

Forget using the word 'rough'; it will lead you into bad habits!
Repair panels are best made from templates; cereal boxes provide a suitable cardboard, which is easily cut and bent. Make the template as many times as is necessary; it's quicker and easier than doing the job in metal.
There's probably 30mins work in making a respectable arch patch.

That's the company I bought my replacement arches from, apparently they are made in Denmark and you've got to grab them when they are in stock as the the future supply can be a bit iffy :-\ Good service from them and all cars arches look as good as new, hopefully I wont be ordering any more in the near future :y

Yep, Denmark it is mate. got to wait 3 weeks for them but they're ordered now so job jobbed :)
....well, until it comes to fitting them ::) ;D
-
It's a nice feeling when the job gets done and you haven't got to keep staring at those rust bubbles getting bigger by the day :y
-
I need mine doing, but will have to be a body shop, as I can only just tell what is a spanner and which end of the screwdriver to use ;D ;D ;D just
-
Body shop may well have the air tool or sykes pickavant did a hand flanging tool ...Then you could put new arch against old arch and scribe a line on old arch then cut off bad metal nearly up to the line and then you can use the flange tool and it makes a step in the old metal and then you place new panel on to the step and the panels become level and then they are welded to each other and thus using far less filler when concealing the join. :y
-
image of new arch if anyone's interested :y

Do they do the inner arch as well :-\

Do they do the inner arch as well :-\
if that was rusty (being out of view) would you not just weld in your own metal? :-\

What I asked... Do they do the inner arch panel as well?
Why I asked... I might need both.

Going way over my head. I assumed old arch cut out and new arch (in pic) welded in. obviously im not a body panel expert (or expert on anything as it happens ;D) so I don't know what youre talkin' about :y
-
Nor do I ;D
I suspect, looking at it, yours has had a previous repair, and I wouldn't be hedging my bets on the condition of the inner :-\
Also, around the arch, the inner and outer are bonded rather than welded :y

Tis my fault cos going to be honest I didn't know there was an inner part lol
Previous repair... yep, but only filler job.
So what youre saying is the pic I posted is the superficial arch but actually the rust could be in inches deep?
cheers mate :y

You'll find out when you pull the paint off :y

That there is a two thousand word picture... ;D
-
No www.carz2.co.uk dont have inner arches. Couldn't find them anywhere. So i need to plate
-
Right, now that makes sense! :'( :'( :'( :'(
Not that im an expert or nowt but surely, as I mentioned before, youd ''fudge'' the inner bit with your own metal.... not like it'd have to be pretty :-\
-
How you getting on ::) Visions of webby with industrial sized chainsaw cutting rust out :( Must be time for a noofers meeting at Symes's soon ::)
-
i would only cut out the metal that is actually rusty and then cut the new guard to the hole you have got i wouldn't cut out good metal just for the sake of it, that is a big piece to weld back in!! :o
