Title: BMW charging problem
Post by: chrisgixer on 12 August 2014, 19:55:45
Family member has a 520 d Estate of some description. Only a couple of years old. Refusing to start due to not holding charge. Initial independent diag suggests battery, but as battery is under warranty it was taken back to BMW. Here we go...

...who promptly insisted the loom was at fault not the battery. £2k to replace.

Oh really.

Being an Estate the battery is in the boot. So I suppose there might be some credence in the loom theory. But in a 2012 car?

Stop start by any chance? That 2.0 diesel isn't known for its reliability...

Also perfectly plausible that a loom fault is the cause of charge/current issues :-\

Does the F10 (which I assume it is as a 2012 car) have an IBS the same as the E60?  They're known to go faulty and do the exact opposite of the thing they're meant to do (stop the battery going flat) and drain the battery..
