..... has sunk! :D :( ::) The Airports Commission has rejected it as an option for expanding capacity. ::)
So I expect they will end up expanding Heathrow after all! ::) Which if this is to be the case then they should have got on with it years ago instead of continually postponing decisions and kicking the can down the road! >:(

But what about the residents of the lovely surrounding areas .. like Staines.
Oh, yeah.. ;D
-
Britain should have expanded its hub capability years ago.
A lot of missed trade and holiday deals especially with the far East.
I always liked Boris island as an idea. That is where we should have spent HS2 money
-
What a complete waste of money that airport would have been...out of 365 days last year it would have spent 270 fog bound oh and who was the brains that decided landing a plan next door to Europe's biggest LNG transfer depot was a good idea????? :o. 40 miles away there is a perfectly good already built airport. It was good enough for NASA to use if required therefore good enough to go on holiday from

Borris Island some place in South Wales Yes. :P ;D ;D
-
I always picture this when I hear about this potential project

Spending on Borris island is said to equal that of hs2.
I shall leave you to decide which is the bigger white elephant. But to me the 3rd(and hence the 4th as it won't stop there) runway is a far more important issue to get right.

I thought it wasn't a half baked idea as it goes, worked for Hong Kong and works well, which is now one of the main Central Asia Hubs.
Could have created shite loads of Jobs for now and the future, without effecting the other 4 Airports, and brought London in to the new world of Airports for years to come, rather than keep bashing Heathrow on the head.
So what happened to Stanstead, which apparently already has a second runway buried under grass.?
-
One can only imagine how much money has been wasted on deciding this and then refusing the Boris Island project ::) And as for HS2 what a complete waste of money as no one will use it or be able to afford to >:( >:( >:(

If Boris wants his airport that badly, he can have this one... €100million airport (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/10506155/Spanish-ghost-airport-up-for-sale.html)... that's a £30million saving right there, and it's nearer Lundun.
There's also this one... Ryan Air opens new central Lundun hub, only 300minutes from Hyde Park (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-28979929) The saving would pay for HS2 outright...
FWIW Birmingham is currently operating at 30% capacity...
HS 2 might change that, but currently the 70% spare won't be used as no bugger wants to fly there ;D
A second runway a Gatwick or a third runway at Heathrow also won't mean two or three times as many flights overnight as there just isn't the space on the ground for them ::)
Extra runways simply mean a bit more space between flights in the short term and perhaps a third more flights in the long term, but the nimbies will swear that it's the end of the world...

Apparently Boris came to Swindon today.....im worried :-\

Don't be... given the way his Napoleon complex is developing, he was probably on his way to Brize from Greenham Common to see if the developers have dug up the runways yet... Brize being where his flight to St Helena departs from :D

What's happened to RAF Lyneham? ???
If they developed that and built a Maglev train to London..... ::)

what about ex raf manston...airport already there

What's happened to RAF Lyneham? ???
If they developed that and built a Maglev train to London..... ::)
Being developed as a technical training school, and no chance of it ever being "developed" into a larger airport .... there were 2 runways.. 18/36 and 07/25.. so 4 "ends" .. at 2 of them, 36 & 25, were bloody big hills (one of which saved my life but that's another story) at the other 2, 18 & 07 were main roads / housing estates. That was part of the reason for the closure as the newer generation of aircraft need longer runways .. and Lyneham cannot be extended... (there used to be 3rd runway .. one end of which also had a big hill, the other points right at Quarters)

Well that quickly scuppered another harebrained idea! ;D Thanks for the explanation though, and it's good to hear it's being used for something useful. :y
