Title: Talking of time delay, Q for the boffins
Post by: Varche on 02 September 2014, 16:27:30
One for the boffins. Todays puzzle concerns Sky News.

I am receiving said news via a dish thousands of miles away. The presenter is in a studio and behind them is a bank of screens showing the same "live" feed of the presenter except you can see the screens showing transmission from about two or so seconds earlier

Why? is it sent to those screens with a deliberate time delay? If it was showing earlier transmission I could get that. Anyone know why?

Most delay these days is due to the digital compression/decompression techniques used although there will be some small satellite delay.

So the screens will most likely be showing the 'digital' delay

If you watch live TV on iplayer, it's quite a bit behind live TV.

two seconds? Remember that I am watching a live item with the screens behind the presenter in the studio showing the same live item. It happens very often so wasn't a one off. Easiest to spot when the banner or ticker tape on the bottom of the screen changes.

On the same issue I watch live Formula One on Spanish digital TV in HD. Super picture quality. Same feed the UK gets I believe From Bernie Ecclestone. I turn the sound off and use UK Radio5 live via satellite Internet. Best of both worlds except the synch is off. Some races the commentary is a good second or two infront of the race and other weekends it is behind or in synch with the picture. I guess the UK or Spanish end has the ability to delay their output by a fraction.

I think they delay it so that they can pull it if something strange happens.  :-\

 ;D  :y

I read recently that Auntie Beeb is working to close that loophole!  >:(

Not quite sure how they will enforce that though.  :-\  Raid peoples homes and take their laptops away for examination?  ::)
