I'm due to drive to spain in the DTi tomorrow.
Today I was going to do an oil change prior to going. I drove it up onto some ramps, and left it ticking over whilst I was sorting out my tools. I went inside to make a cuppa to let it warm up - and as I came out, the engine just stopped. It stop dead with no coughing or warning and wouldn't restart.
Now my fuel is low. Not flashing low, but just dropped onto the red. And the front was raised on ramps.
Do we think that, it's likely just run too low, due to the angle of the car?
When I finish work I will put a couple of cans of diesel in and see if she'll go. I'm fearful it will have sucked air and will be a female dog to start now... :(

I just don't understand why people let the fuel level get so low. I always top up as soon as it gets anywhere near the quarter full mark and usually when it's below half. It doesn't cost any more, does it?

I can't afford to fill up as often as you.
I borrow petrol from my neighbour when he's not about. :)

Estate tanks and DTi pumps mate. Never let the level get anywhere near the red.
Put a fair few litres of diesel in and don't try to pull the fuel through by cranking it over, fit a pump bulb and prime it fully then get someone to pump it while you turn it over.
The saloons aren't so bad due to the shape of the tank.

Snot just the petrol estates then ::) mind you, all that weight in the back won't have helped ;D

No time for fitting primers etc, need to be on the road at 7am and nowhere open :(
Got her started. 6 gallons of diesel, the back raised up, and (a fair bit of) cranking with the back jacked right up. Stank to high heaven!!!!
I know the pumps don't like cranking but I wasn't resorting to easy start...

Don't the pumps run hot and burn out if ran dry .. common fault as the fuel acts as a coolant :-\

Yes, the diesel is the cooling agent and also the lubrication - hence why adding 2 stroke oil to the diesel can help.
