While I was on holiday I pinched the front OS wheel off my elite, to act as a full size spare for my estate. In place of the elites wheel I let it rest on an old knackered steel wheel with a duff flat tyre.
This is all on my own private drive off the road.
In my absence my neighbour thought I'd had a puncture. To stop the weight of the car damaging the tyre he has jacked up the offside front. He has used a non suitable jack, has destroyed the jacking point, and also trashed the sill cover which is now totally bent out of shape.
He is one of those old busy body types who interferes in everything we do including going through our bins to check we recycle correctly..(!)
At breaking point

It's ok
I think that there is such a thing as "justifiable homicide" :y

Surely this is classed as criminal damage?
Tell him he needs to pay for it to be put right, or pursue it through police/small claims.

New patio & disappearing neighbour springs to mind !!

It is technically criminal damage, because the law doesn't require the damage to be intentional - a reckless act also counts.
The reality is though it wouldn't go anywhere. He is an old boy who, whilst incompetent, was trying to do a decent thing. As such very unlikely to be in public interest.
I also don't want that friction with a next door neighbour. I'm going to make it clear he isn't to touch our cars in future though!

Perhaps build a nice big wall to separate things?

He has effectively written the car off, so 'dangle berries' to neighbour diplomacy. Get a colleguiy to accompany you next door, with an estimated cost of repair. He then gets a reasonable period of time to reimburse you or you take legal action, through your insurers legal assistance if required.
Re the damage the covers do twist off under pressure, might be a busted clip or two, so that is cosmetic. What isn't cosmetic is the damage to the jacking point as this is on a structural seem. So any repair there needs to be proper to retain strength and also stop it dissolving, as a split seam might allow water into the sill...
If it were my car you'd have heard the yelling from Spain...

Sorry to hear this James :( :( :(
The old boy sounds like a Victor Meldrew or a Martin in Ever Decreasing Circles ::) ::) ::) ::)
Bloody annoying! ::)

Put him in your recycling bin then send him of to the tip where the seagulls will pecks his eyes out nosey old git. >:(
-
'dangle berries' to him, all he had to do was ask if he could help or even put a suggestion forward to you....
He'd be getting a bill off me for the damage done...
-
Difficult one , he wanted to do the decent thing but should have asked first . So as not to cause friction just send a letter saying although you seen he was only trying to help he has damaged the car and caused a big repair bill and you need the car repaired at his cost ... See what happens :-\
-
Smash his car up, you'll feel better :)

I tried that (buried a garage door into 2 of the neighbours cars). I felt quite bad about it ::)

It's not just the jacking point cover, the sill cover is screwed, won't go back in shape
This is just one issue though, there is a wider issue in that he won't leave us alone.
He is always pottering about in his garage which us right next to mine, it would be so awkward if I got any kind of authority involved, despite the fact I've tried hard to tell him nicely....!
-
That was how I read it re the damage... pop the sill cover off and go from there :y but be prepared to find the sill stoved in :-\
You need to nip his behaviour in the bud now. And you cannot leave the car ignored. My neighbour reversed into my car and didn't tell me for four days (apparently he hadn't seen me ::)) and only fessed up when I knocked on his door... long story short, I got a quote, presented it, he paid and that was that, job jobbed. Still on sociable terms five years later.
Whether you involve the police or not depends on his reaction. But ignoring it is the last thing you should do, because he will keep pushing as long as you take it.
On the plus side, at least you know why the previous owners moved :-X
-
I have one of those.
We got our fence up, he started digging the posts up to the tend the fence nearly collapsed.
Because his gras needs air.
The fence was 5 foot hight.
I called the council, he had to rectify the damages and my fence gone up to 6,5 foot now.
With the nice friendly chat, if this is happend again he has a war on his hands where the 2nd worldwar was like a playground fight against.
He has the choice.
Since he is nice.
Well, he seen the friends I have coming round, and overseen an argument with someone else on the street, which turned out this one walked after I Told him how much pain a human body can take before the dead. Lol
No probs since with cars, morobikes, and anything else.
-
Given James' employer, I can't see that overall approach being recommended ::)
James... Try removing the screw under the front of the sill cover, then slide the whole thing forward after 2" it should simply fall off.
Then you can assess the damage properly.
To refit, simply slide the cover onto the rear end cap and tap it back onto the clips. If the front screw doesn't quite locate then slide the sill cover slightly to correct the position and refit the screw.
If you have a dog, bag up tye poo in nappy bags and collect them in a a box in the garage. Double bagged it won't smell. Then empty it in to your rubbish bin the day before bin day. He will soon get pissed off at finding bags of shite every time he checks your bin.. You could also move your bins to inside the garage. That way if he wants to check them he has to tresspass to do it. With a camera you can then build a reasonable case against him.
First issue is to deal with the car. But, as said earlier, do NOT let it fester. Your relationship at home is far more important than the one with your neighbour, and if he is this much of a nuisance after a few months, it will become serious problem rather than an irritation.

I see you have rolled over... :'(

Nope. Not at all. The decision to break is based on the fact I've bought a newer, much tidier saloon, and the funds from breaking the elite will cover all the bits to get the new one serviced etc.
I had been considering this before the damage was done, and it's still the best option for me.
Re the neighbours, thier car and caravan is gone, I've not been able to catch him yet. I have spoken to his son, who has said the whole family are at breaking point with his ways, which is dementia related, so I don't want to be too pushy, above all I just want to tell him he has to leave me (and even more so my mrs) alone... :y
-
Hmmm...
Had the authorities been involved then he(and his family) would have surely received support with any mental illness... Letting it slide does noone any favours in the long run.
Shame that you have effectively been forced into scrapping an otherwise serviable car though :-\

His son did say a dementia team have started to work with them to set up a support package, so that's already underway. Call me soft but in light of this, and the fact it was with good intentions and not malice that the damage was caused, I'm going to consider the resolution to be a chat with him and his son present to try and set some boundaries.
Problem is he is unlikely to remember them so his family will have to give him a lot of support and keep him in check
Tbh I feel mostly for his wife :(

It does show theres more to things than first imagined, you're a patient decent man James :y

Amen to that.

its good to be the bigger man and mature, some neighbours need there head shoveing up there arses and then a band of duct tape wrapped round to keep the position then rolling off the biggest hill around(id have shares in duct tape manufacturer with mine hahaha)but being diplomatic is the key to start with and yes involve his son and family cos at the end of the day james ole bean home is supposed to be a refuge from the stress and strains of life and if someone disrupts that then it needs sorting
-
Well done on the patience James :), in the light of the day you have saved his family from further stress. This forum can be a good release for problems and giving time before action. :y
As some know dealing with dementia is an awful and trying time for a loved one with this terrible disease :(

And you know who is driving do you? When my uncle was diagnosed I had to take his car without his knowledge to prevent any accidents, this could be a case in point.
