Since (if not before) having to change head gasket, and cam belt, (Aug) have been trying to resolve a rough tickover problem.
This has gradually been getting worse
Codes showed lean mixture, lamba 1 probs and misfire on pot 3, changed Lamba 1, still the same
Live data showed everything seemed to be operating fine apart from running lean
Looked at numerous previous posts on this and have changed/checked - plugs, plugwells, scuttle foam, coilpack, MAF, breathers and vac pipes. Have even changed the exhaust manifold which had a crack in it (luckily have spares from old mig)
Have triple checked cam belt installation
There are no "odd" noises
So the symptoms
Engine runs fine at all other times apart from tickover (and when decellerating)
Tickover is erratic/irregular (up/down) from cold and when at normal running temp
Slightly improves when on LPG
Improves when in gear and holding on foot brake, BUT, is extreme when "crawling" and in neutral
and the odd one's
Brake pedal is stiff and inefective when car first started (hot or cold), but ok after about 30 secs
When ticking over for an extended time, there is a "small" burst of white/blue smoke from exhaust when revved
Will be removing and cleaning throttle body (as per maint guide) this weekend but do not hold-out much hope
Should I suspect a valve guide seal ?
Should I suspect the brake servo ?
Any other suggestions ? (apart from STMO's usual ones)
Thanks
Phil
edit: the head gasket seems to be ok, double checked by someone else
-
check your servo hose-or servo leaking - had this erratic idle that went when foot on brake--servo was fault

Thanks symes
Have checked servo hose, ok when "sucked" :o
Dont know how to check servo leaking, but brakes work fine the rest of the time, assumed this indicated working fine

try that but the smoke you get does seem to me its a servo leak tbh

Check earths at rear of head are tight, also check all vacum tubing is ok :y

If you mean the one on the EGR have done that - thanks
oh yes and I have blanked the EGR

I'm thinking that vacuum leaks are the first port of call to check when you have a misfire only at idle and then disappears when revs on. :y
I personally would check with carb cleaner but I have been told off for this as it can ruin the vac hoses. inspect that brake servo very carefully up close :y

Update
So today have removed throttle body and cleaned it. Unblocked the little hole as per guide and was hopefull this was the problem
But not, still the same
So have again checked the cam belt, tried with spare MAF, coil pack, put new plugs in and double checked all pipes, cannot find anything
Apart from the brake servo not charging up immediately got no other clue, not had chance to read codes or live data but no spanner light
Can anyone tell me how to remove the vac pipe connection from the servo ?
Tried twisting it the direction of the arrow but felt like I was straining it beyong 90deg

Also what is this item connected to the vac pipe ?

Connection to the servo simply pulls out... easier if there's no vacuum, so press the brake pedal until it goes solid...
I think that other item is a one way valve :y

Thanks for that :y will try a bit harder ::)

Something different today - must have made a difference the 'un-blocked' hole
After a couple of miles the EML light went out (been on for a couple of weeks) and tickover was a 'little' bit better
So took it for a longer run (scenic route ::) )
Then the spanner light came on, and keeps coming on. Perhaps now I'll have some realistic codes to follow up :y :-v
Brake servo no longer playing up ???????

Any coolant loss?
Any white smoke from startup only? :)

Coolant loss, Yes, but, it is from a small leak on the LPG regulator, i believe. Will be getting it swopped next week so will know if there are others
No smoke that I've noticed, only when left ticking over (roughly) for an extended period when I was trying to "suss out" any leaky pipes
Did you read the diatribe at the top of post ? I have recently done the HG and dont suspect the valve seals, YET
-
have you done a compression test on the engine..........this will tell you if the problem is inside the engine (leaking/burnt valve)or outside the engine (vacuum leak)
-
Have V6 which refuses to idle, and also misfire, which sorts itself out over 1000rpm or so. So now watching this thread with great interest.
I've cleaned the ICV, but strongly suspecting vac pipes, now :y

Update .....
James - not seen any blue smoke, although have been getting petrol smell when first started with rough tickover
Last couple of days has not always wanted to start straight away, but does eventually start - cold or hot ???
Codes reset today - mostly lean mixture & misfire codes plus O2 sensor low
Gave it a run and got spanner light - lean mixture - reset
Live data with SnapOn reader showed
tickover Lamba 1=37 Lamba 2=179 ???
@ 4000 rpm Lamba 1=59 Lamba 2=119 ???
Everything was up to normal running temp
Guy suggested changing Lamba 2 (and maybe 1 again). Going to do on Friday - if no other suggestions :-\
...... and on way home EML light came on again - no spanner ???
