Post by: Mikeb59 on 12 October 2014, 21:01:24
Hi all, i'm new on here, how are you all, i' m looking to buy an omega 3.0" theres one near me for sale, its got a bit of rust near the rear arch apart from that the rest of the body looks great, does it have a timing belt or chain, if so how much to change them, plus water pump change, how often? Its an eleite version so all the extras onit, the guy reckons he gets 25 mpg round town and 34 on the run? Is this about correct? Any other issues i should look for,  a bit of my background. Engineer by trade and always had clssic cars, my last one was a tr6 i fully rebuilt it, i now hve  aVW T4 which is easy to work and i love the camper scene, the omega will have to work for its living lol, i need a big boot for my gear, i'm fed up with my kangoo van, i need comfort and size 😀

Welcome. 3.0l is a belt, 40k or 4yrs (was 80k, but GM revised this). A handy piece of knowledge for bartering ;D

Hi & welcome to Oof

Some of this may be covered in above posts but Important things to look for:

 1. Cambelt history   every 4 years or 40,000 miles whichever comes sooner. If no proven history it will need doing .

 2. Engine breather system maintenance ( lack of causes cam cover gasket failure) feel around lower edges of camcovers for oil & remove a plug lead or 2 if you can ,to see if  there is any oil in plug wells. presuming it's 3.0 as you say. Engine bay is usually smokey when hot  as oil drips  on to exhausts if gasket/s have failed.

3. Check front tyres for uneven wear .  Uneven wear usually means wishbone failure & steering geometry  problems.

4. Check coolant header tank for nice clean (ideally pink) coolant . And check theres no oily sludge in there which means probable oil cooler failure.

5.  try & make sure you get the "Car Pass" with the documentation ( small credit card size ticket which has relevant security codes & details for that car)  very helpful for replacement keys etc.  Car passes cost upwards of £25 to replace from VX

Hope this helps you  . . .  wish I'd known all that when I got my first one years ago  ;D ;D ;D

. If you have anymore questions  . . . & please do ask  . . . post them in "omega general help"  for a better response    :y :y
