Advisories on tyres....and ball joints.
88,000 miles. Cambelt last changed at 48,000 miles.
2.5 V6 with a weird auto box.
£1200....Hmmm. :)

If you buy it, I'll come round and get rid of that old Omega for you. :y No need to say Thanks, I like helping out the elderly! :)
-
Buy it... If nowt else it will distract Mrs Opti from the mess in the garden as she tries to smack you round the head with it ::)

That will be a few hundred to renew then :( It wont match up to the mighty Mig :)

Just say no to the Selespeed. Far more bother than theyre worth. Shame, Cos theyre pretty enough to put on a stick in your garden.

Yep...and Alfa's have a reputation for being...... cough...cough...fragile.
I've driven it and the Omega would waste it in a staright line. :y
The gearbox is really weird. A four speed auto...I think. ??? ???

Is that what it is called?
How is it different to a 'normal' auto?

Its a robotised manual as opposed to a proper auto - instead of your left leg and arm, it uses electronics, hydraulics, and voodoo to operate the clutch and change cogs. Hence the problems, being Italian and electronic.
-
Are they paying you £1200 to take it? If so it might be worth considering. Otherwise, run away. Fast.
-
No sillyspeed on the v6 - normal 4 speed auto. Selespeed was for the 2 litre 4-pots and, as stated above, was a robotised 5 speed box and clutch. A slightly different version of the Selespeed was available on the 3.2 GTA, but the standard Selespeed is very sensitive to calibration/adjustment, lots of problems I believe if the clutch actuating rod length is not spot-on.

That sounds about right. I don't remember any paddles. I seem to recall that it had 'city' and 'sport' buttons.

What exactly is attracting you to it? The price? It's £1200 for a reason.

It's not an Audi, BMW, or Merc. :y
German cars are designed by people who only use the missionary position when having sex. ;D ;D Thorough but dull. ;)

No. It's an alfa. Just because the Germans are dull and boring, no need to buy a comedy car. ;D

We can agree on this. :y
I'd like a Montreal but I doubt I can find one for £1200. ::) ::) :)
-
£1200 is not a huge amount of money. The alfa is a total gamble. So gamble on something a bit more unusual.
I reckon you'd enjoy a saab turbo. Even the older ones can really shift, they're comfortable and look quite good. Ask Jon (omegod), he loves his.
-
I would buy an alfa if and only if its a manual.. they are prone to failures like other cars may be a bit more than avg, but parts are stupidly expensive.. however a manual 6 will be a joy to drive when properly maintained which will be costly..

I'm craving either a 9000 turbo or a 9-5 estate. Had a ride in a 400bhp one the other week, which was interesting...

Fixed :y

Opti your inbox is full ::)

Could you bunch of buggers stop bigging up Saab please? I'm looking for a 2.3t 95 as a replacement for the '5.
You are putting the prices up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-* >:(
-
Sorry for the DP;
I'm also looking at the Alfa 166 - So, if you know of a good 'un..............
-
It's £1,200 for a reason. It's a bit like a P38 Range Rover...some are excellent, but on balance most are terrible. I would never choose to sell one, too much risk.
They are attractive, but up the budget to £2000 and buy a 2003+ Jaguar XJ (X350), or go for a Lexus?

agreed.. any old car is a money pit.. but 1200 can hardly buy 1/10th of this car in parts ;D

Rollox. Older cars, especially if they are not a Mondeo, Vectra...... it's difficult to value them. Hard to get a grasp on a car's value when there aren't a gazillion and 1 next to it on AutoTrader etc.
That's why these rarer vehicles tend to go one of two ways, dirt cheap, or ruddy expensive.
Look at the Omega, for example! ::)

I know it would be trouble.......really I do.......but.

Just think of your gentlemans vegetables as you sign the V5 ::)

I don't think they're that desirable, and pretty small too.

Yes....Mrs Opti wants a Porsche Boxster. We had a test drive in a 2.7 litre version a few months ago. It sounded great and was reasonably rapid :y Spartan though :-\

Ah. All becomes clear. Midlife crises.

I'm six-one and just about fit.
Walk your whippet more often and you should be able to get your beer gut behind the steering wheel. ;) ;D ;D ;D

Yep......Lusting after unobtainable young women, dreaming about fast cars and exotic places. :y
Once this madness has passed I shall content myself with regular trips to the garden centre and the bowling green. :'( :'( :'(
You know how it is, Steve. ;D ;D

If he wanted you, he'd have had you last week. Rejoice...you still have plenty of time to throw your money away on alfa romeo's. ;D

Yes. And the mere thought of what could have happened still gives me the shits. :-\

Try not to dwell on it, mate. Easier said than done, I know. If you have nothing to keep you at home, try a weekend away with the missus. Just you and her, relaxing.

[talking for buying an unknown old one] all old cars cost more than its worth (may be many times) sooner or later.. question is in whose hands it will explode.. if it exploded before you and the owner/seller repaired you are lucky.. even the receipts dont guarantee the repairs because it may be done by an incompetent..
anyway we are not talking about porsche or ferrari or lambo ::)

"The outlet of all earthly passions gives a momentary satisfaction, yet creates a tendency for more. In this struggle the satisfaction of the soul is overlooked by man who is constantly busied in the pursuit of its true bliss. The true delight of the soul lies in love, harmony, and beauty, the outcome of which is wisdom, calm, peace. The more constant they are the greater is the satisfaction of the soul."

Cem.... deep down you have the soul of a poet. Not quite sure what it has do do with a bargain-basement Alfa though. ;D :y
