Title: Towing a caravan
Post by: gpalf on 25 June 2008, 15:45:34
New to Omegas, never towed with one before obviously, but wondered if anyone out there does and how do they handle and what sort of consumption do you get. Bearing in mind tht my caravan is a 20 footer.

I have towed it with a Rover 825 before without a hitch and relativley good return on fuel.

3.0 Facelift Estate
Bike rack on the roof with 4 bikes & car loaded with wifes shoes & clothes  :(
Caravan is 23ft 1700Kg

Blackpool to New Forest average consumption of 23MPG if driven sensibly(ish)

Had 18MPG before but that was charging along into a headwind

Most I have managed is 25MPG and that was slipstreaming wagons whenever possible

Stability - Using an Alko now and no problems whatsoever. Pulls better uphill than my sisters V6 Disco.

Surely towing without a hitch is impossible, or at the least very dangerous?   ::)

Omega is easily the best towcar I've had in 20 years... I never thought the Granada Scorpio would be beaten .. but it is.

I tow a 1600kgs, 23' 3" caravan most weekends, never a problem.

I can't tell you the latest consumption .. as I haven't put petrol in for 6 weeks, :) but on gas it's only costing me 14.4 pence/mile instead of the 24.8 pence/mile it was costing on petrol !!!

3.0 ltr v6 Elite saloon, Using an Alko hitch the car pulls the van no problems sometimes I forget the van is hitched on the back. I get a return of approx 25-27 mpg doing a steady 55mph.

get the autobox ecu upgrade - makes a vast difference to the box and for towing stops the box hunting for gears about 50 -60mph
upgrade requires tech2 facility

When I read it back before I posted it , I thought there would be a smart response , but what the hell !!

All replys put my mind at ease.  :y I have known big Vauxhalls have been excellent tow cars for years , but my local mechanic tried putting me off Omegas telling me that they were uneconomical and dodgy  :-? Thank god I did not listen to him. ;D
