To be fair Jaime... if you have to eat it overdone then there's no point in that anyway...like eating rubber. or card  ::)

Has to be rare. End of  :y

Eating it dead does mean you need a much, much better quality steak in order to keep it tender and tasty.  Thats why all these poxy pubs trying to make out they are proper restuarants cook them medium rare (no matter what you ask for), as the steak they use is shite

If you're only allowed to eat it once in a blue moon, then it must be getting pretty rare anyways ::)

Mocking aside, the trick is getting the skillet (if thin cuts) or griddle (for anything 1/2" or thicker) hot enough to actually sear the surface just long enough to seal the surface and warm it through, all in about 30 seconds a side... needs to also be hot enough that the chosen cheese melts over it if you're that way inclined 8)

I kinda agree, but we are miles ahead of the cheese eating surrender monkeys. You need a chainsaw for their finest steak.

There's an independent butcher near where I live in Wales, and his steak whatever cut, is always fantastic. However . . . . . it realy is not cheap  :(  SWMBO has a significant birthday this weekend and kids are coming to stay, Seriously considering a whole fillet, pan seared whole, then oven for a few minutes, sliced and served with green pepper cream sauce !  All invitied . . . . . . . . . NO, just kidding  :o

Funny that, I was talking to the missus about dusting of the slow cooker this weekend ;)

2 or 3 packets of finest beef mince
2 or 3 packets of stewing steak
4 beef Oxo cubes
A splash of gravy powder to thicken it up a little
Lots of fresh kidney and liver
A couple of nice onions chopped up and chucked in for luck
All from LIDL of course

Switch the slow cooker on HIGH for about 3 hours to get the juices flowing and give it a good stir then down to LOW for a few more hours then let it cool over night.
Back on LOW a few hours before you eat  :-* :)

Serve with Mash spuds, roast spuds, Yorkshire puddings and fresh veg  :-* :-*

................ and a nice bottle of wine  :)

That explains why they see it as an insult if you ask them to cook it anything above rare.

Have to totally disagree, sorry have worked in the meat trade catering side i might add for over 40 years. Working in Bristol but serving Hotels and restaurants as far a field as London and Yorkshire. We sell steak from all over the world Brazil Argentina the USA and of coarse Great Britain. South American meat is tender but generally its flavorless. Good meat comes at a price but even then nothing is guaranteed, and of coarse it helps if the cook is good at there job.  :y

Ah....the voice of reason. Spoilt bastards is what they are. I just eat what I get, which I usually have to cook myself. If I go out and order steak, then I expect it to be a lottery, so I usually don't (order steak).

Agreed. About one steak in every ten is tender. Most are like rubber. :-\

Yep, and, if that's what you ask for, they select you a ropey bit, rather than "waste" a nice cut.

I think your missing the point.

I cant get a good steak here (god have I tried), even south American meat here is not up to south American meat in south America.  :y

What's all this talk of not getting a good steak here?

We have the best butchers in the world if people care to use them... quality meat... but of course you have to pay for it.

However, I went to Texas few years back and cow I had in Fort Worth was the best ever. Ever.

A good steak doesn't need a steak knife. There's a place in Spain where the knifes are very blunt. ;)

I'm not telling you where, I shall eat it all myself, thankyou very much. :) ;D

Last time I was there (2001) I apparently "insulted" the chef in the eaterie we were in because I sent it back twice and asked them to cook it properly, due to the fact it was so rare that "Old McDonald" was still milking the bastard. It wouldn't surprise me to find they spat on or similar on the third go, but that more than likely gave it a bit of body to be honest.

That be south of the equator. Us country boys don't like straying too far from our sheep and goats...

I've had some pretty reasonable steaks in Spain...  ...and some really crap ones. Much as here really, only here, price isn't necessarily a guide to how good a steak will be.

I agree about the knives. Obviously I would, seeing as I try not to use a knife  :-[

5 of us had lunch at the Argentinian Steak House near St Pauls today. 12 oz Churasco de Lomo each. Absolutely first class and not a complaint in sight.

There's actually nothing in that post you can disagree with, if you notice. But yet.... ;D

I would recommend a Costco cow, though I accept that the cost is unaffordable to some - even if in the long run its cheaper. We get a fair few meals from one, and its still good despite going through our freezer :y
