Or spot lights in this case. Refurbishing Master Vamps bedroom ready for Miss Vamps I have installed new lighting, in all this includes 6 spot lights at 50 watt each, so if she has both on it is 300watts; and she is a booger for leaving lights on......... ::) ::)
Bought 6 x LED spot bulbs rated at 4.5 watt each, and they are brighter with a more natural light, total of 28 Watts if she left them on, quite a saving for a better light......... :y :y
Bought a 'normal' bulb for our lamp in the lounge, but not tried it yet........ ;)

"SNAP". Well, almost... Just ordered 11. 4.5 watt G.U.10 wide angle bulbs. :y

I've converted virtually all my bulbs to LED, bar living room and dining room (no suitable types available).
My big bro, as most here know, has 2 retail shops, and in one of them has ripped out all the old halogen and those ultra bright display lights (can't remember what they are, magnesium?) and replaced with LED spots, and his energy company are suspicious, has his electric usage has dropped from "a four figure sum" to a couple of hundred quid a month in that premises.

I'm sure Miss Vamps is well aware of the cost of electricity and won't leave any lights on. All teenagers are energy conscious. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Can LED lights be used with a dimmer switch?
I know that some low energy bulbs can't.
Are LED lights expensive?
-
I've put dimmable B22 ( normal ) bulbs in living room ( candle type) using original dimmer - works ok , but when on low light is white not orange oon the old incandesent type- cost £4.50 each ( off amazon) , Wilkos are £7.50 at moment so now missus is allowed to have lights on in living room when it gets dark. I thought would have to change dimmer switch @ approx £18 per dimmer , which increases the pay-back time

I have just checked out the cost of LED's...... :( :( :(
I would need to live for a thousand years to get my money back.
My guess is that two or three years from now these things will cost pennies.
I shall wait until then. :y

I saw and didn't buy some lifetime guarantee bulbs - about £12.50 each. Who keeps a receipt for that long and would the shop honour it?
Only two ways for manufacturer to make money on a product. replacement (short lifespan) or high initial outlay.

Can LED lights be used with a dimmer switch?
Yes, although both the lamp and the dimmer switch have to be designed to do so (same applies to the "low energy" fluorescents).

A decent GU10 replacement will set you back around £6 - £7 per lamp, don't bother with the cheap Chinese shite from the likes of fleabay.
-
Yep, don't bother with Ikea ones either. Just had a LED candle fail after 3 months in a bedside table lamp. >:(

No they're not, and LED Hut would be a definite contender for me if I were going down the LED route.
-
My (normal bayonet and e27) LED ones I bought from Tesco when they were BOGOF, so basically a fiver each for dimmable Osram 60w equivs.
The light output seems warmer than CFL enery saving bulbs, the light is instant on full brightness, and seems an awful lot brighter than the 60w equiv CFLs they replaced.

That's where I went.............. :D just checked paid £5.98 per bulb, identical to yours and £8.00 for the standard bulb all plus VAT. Free delivery and I found a packed of Haribo's in the box........ :y :y
-
VAT Free at the moment......... :D :D so just bought a load of varying bulbs, for the whole house, I accept it may take a while to repay, if it ever does, but as we seem to have the highest electricity bill for any 3 bed semi in the Country every little helps............... ;) ;)

Not had mine yet, I'll be looking for my Haribo's.... :y :y

Yes, although both the lamp and the dimmer switch have to be designed to do so (same applies to the "low energy" fluorescents).
The key words (on the dimmer) seem to be "trailing edge dimming".
(AC electricity should be a nice smooth sine wave, the original 1970s dimmers chop the leading edge off each half cycle to reduce the power input and hence dim the lamp. This worked fine on filament/GLS lamps but the resulting step at the start of each half cycle plays havoc with the components in CFL and LED lamps. Trailing edge dimmers start each half cycle normally but switch off part way through. For some reason this upsets the CFL and LED lamps much less than leading edge dimming.)

I find these excellent, I blagged them for £3.50 ea plus VAT on Trade, with a two year warranty. I have fitted 34 of these and 6 dimmable. Well pleased, and enjoying the reduced leccy usage. :y :y :y

TBH, Ive only changed the kitchen/bedroom halogens to led, oh and the dining room overhead light cluster (it had 5 x 60w golf ball type bulbs in it, now its got 5 x candle 3w candle bulbs in it, not as bright but ok) . The rest of the ceiling lights/table lamps are 10w CFL's, mini spirals, which after the initial min or 2 warm up, give a better/warmer/brighter light than the leds, apart from the kitchen leds, which are 8W wide angle COB spots and are actually brighter than the 50W halogens they replaced. So, until the CFL's give up and ive used the spares I have, seeing as the leccy saving is minimal I wont be swapping any of the CFL's to leds. :y

Yep, got another pack today, not got the bulbs replaced yet, though Miss Vamps claimed one! she has a reading light with an 'energy saver bulb' that takes time to warm up, and loves the new LED lights......... ::) ::) ;) ;D ;D
