Title: Deja vu with Win operating systems.
Post by: Varche on 19 November 2014, 14:38:56
I seem to fall into this hole periodically.

I have three identical few year old HP desktops. The third is a source of parts if needed. Today I thought I would get it working as an BBC iplayer download machine next to the Tv. Fired it up and the "preloaded " for free by vendor Win8 operating system kicked in. Now of course Microsoft have spotted it isn't kosher and want me to upgrade/put in the key etcetc.

I have WinXP Home with licence on one machine and pre loaded Vista with key on the other. I also have an XP Pro SP1 disc with key somewhere.

I don't particularly like Win 8 so what are my options please for getting this third box up and working?

I thought it would be dead easy to go online and find someone flogging a kosher disc and key for say Vista or Win 7 but this seems the only one at moment on the Bay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/windows-vista-business-operatings-system-DVD-disc-genuine-/181584902020?pt=UK_Computing_Software_Software_SR&hash=item2a474db784

If the solution is to buy a retail Win7 pack I would need to be able to load it onto a different machine one day.

I feel vaguely tempted to use Linux in some form but I only have a two year old Ubuntu disc.

Any guru thoughts please?

There are some Linux distributions that are already customised for use as a TV "catch up" device, etc.

Mythbuntu is one example I've dabbled with in the past. There will be others. Not worth paying the Microsoft tax for such a box, IMHO, although there'll be a bit of a learning curve.

A Raspberry Pi might even do what you want.

Any genuine version of Win7 should get you up and running. As always, I'd avoid egay, and use a reputable supplier - Windows keys are one shot only, and if its already used, MS aren't going to be overly helpful ;)
