Compaq Presario CQ56 AMD V140 processor 2GB Ram, Windows 7 Home Premium
My laptop is very slow for about 20 minutes or so after start up, but after that it's fine ::) I've been through the programs and uninstalled anything that I think isn't necessary, run a malwarebytes scan, CC Cleaner and I was using Chrome but have uninstalled that and now using Firefox which has improved things a little but not much. :-\
The only other thing that I can think of is to restore to factory settings, which is a bit of a faff, so any thoughts? ::)
The other thing is Antivirus software. I use Microsoft Essentials, but it takes all day to do a full scan. :-\ Is this normal? :-\ Quick scan takes about 20 minutes, but I do like to do a full one periodically. TIA :y :y :y

Computer is Dell M90 Precision, 2gb ram T400 Intel 2 core 2.16
Hi Steve,
I have just run Essentials on my laptop...in Control Panel it lists 95 programmes installed. The Quick Scan took 3.14 minutes.
Probably does not help you, but shows the time on my laptop. The C drive has 50gb used out of 80gb.
I had a problem with an icon that appeared called 'Search Protect'. It is almost impossible to get rid of it. But I googled, and found a small piece of free software called ADW Cleaner. You just download it and run it. It soon got rid of that problem....and also found others which were quickly dispatched.
May help a bit.

How much stuff is running in the background, start menu is another good place to start and get rid of anything not really required at start up.
CCleaner has a good tool for doing this - Tools / startup.
Can also uninstall anything not used anymore - again CCleaner - Tools / Uninstall,
Do another Clean and registry clean up after doing the above before a reboot.
Also check Drive Space, ideally needs 10% free or more if running Win7

having just checked the specs on your listed machine I can see nothing in them to cause the problems that your listing. it looks as though it needs a good clean in both hardware and software. i've found both malware antibytes and also cc cleaner to both be useful but also limited. my suggestion would be to install spybot to check for nasties running in the background and also a very good defragmenting tool, the last I heard the windows tool isn't too bad but other flavours are available and iv'e no doubt those amongst us know far more about pc workings than me !

A full restore will always speed it up, but the hardware will never set the world alight, sorry.

Hmmmmm.
Everyone has the right idea as to why it's running like a dog, but then advise a completely counter-productive method of resolution.
Don't install memory/cpu hungry software to resolve a lack of memory/cpu availability.
Start > Run > msconfig
Go to the Startup Tab and unckeck everything that you don't actually want to run when Windows Boots.
Then go to the Services Tab and check the 'Hide all Microsoft Services' box.
Uncheck everything in that window that you don't want to run when Windows Boots.
Apply and Restart.
Why use crappy software which is known to be problematic when you can do it yourself in 30 seconds?

Start > Run > msconfig
yep.. and a defrag may help

Lack of knowledge and the software makes things easier. ::) I take your point though, as I was looking at the CC cleaner startup list and CC Cleaner was amongst it. ::)
Trouble is though, as a fully paid up Luddite I don't really know what I need and don't at start up! :-\ I've disabled a couple of things like Spotify for example and that has improved it. :y

Disable the lot, everything.
Then re-install your anti-virus software (if you use one).
You won't need any application to load on Boot! If you do find something isn't working, just go back into 'msconfig' re-check the box and reboot. :y
