Just that.. has anyone ever done this? To save the first responder asking 'why would you need to? Just cut it, remove the two ends for neatness, then refit the new sensor away from the exhaust manifold' - this I already know.
My reason is I've my eye on a good one that's done 37k at the scrap yard - if I can get it off, then it's a freebie sensor, and as I've already got one that's recently fitted to the V6, I don't need one it's just a very good spare one to have, that's all. I'm not fancying spending the £50+ on a new wire purely as a spare which I (touch wood) will never need. Thanks y'all :y.

The cabling goes up between the oil cooler pipes, IIRC, and is attached to them out of reach up the back of the engine. Add in the fact that the plug is on one end and the sensor on the other - your changes of threading them out from where the wiring lives is probably pretty much next to nil..
Unless you can pull the engine from the car and do it at home ;)

Cheers. It's a shame. The cats have been removed (by the scrappy, who scrapped them... >:( ), both ends are loose and wiggly. I've got pretty decent access all round, as you cay, the oil cooler pipes are there trapping the plug. I have managed to drift them a little, allowing the wire to pull and push with relative ease. Didn't know if there was a bit just out of sight where there is a slightly bigger aperture, or something, just enough to get the smaller plug through, you know? Might try undoing the oil cooler pipes (though they seem impossible from this angle) see if that gets me a couple of mm... I suspect cold hands, oil stains, a bad back, and no crank sensor for my efforts!

Yes, I have, absolute 'arris of a job.
Don't bother with 2nd hand crank sensors, no matter how free they are ;)

I'll second that.
If you're that worried about your crank sensor, then buy and fit a new one. Then keep your existing working one as the spare.
Omegas are no worse than anything else for crank sensors, so don't worry too much!
