My mother visited recently. F1 happened to be on in the background. After a lul in the conversation, she demanded to know why there aren't any women in F1.
There are, I said. Theres female team managers, Williams and Force India, there's Female mechanics, numerous in various pit garages, there's female test drivers. Susi Wolf for Williams. Think there's another that escapes?
Not very many though she says. It's a male dominated sport. ....Er, well, yes I suppose it is.
Are Women kept out of the sport? She says. ??? ...Mum. If women where the fastest drivers I guarantee you there wouldn't be a single F1 team that wouldn't have them driving in the top flight imediately. They spend millions to find a fraction of a second advantage over the other teams. Etc etc....
But what about social issues in the lower leagues? Yes that's tricky for all drivers. Money is a major problem in the sport.
Ah, so rich men can get in. MUM. (Ffs) ...younger men are, by default, more reckless than women. That's biological. They take more risks, to the point of being expendable in their own outlook sometimes. (Think Guy Martin/TT Etc. Or indeed any war situation)
Well, yes I suppose. She says.
I told her to stop looking for someone to blame, and accept that men and women are biologically differant. ...disgruntled look.... But what about the suffragettes?
I so look forward to Mums visits. ;D

One team did have a female test driver with a bright future ahead of her until they tried to decapitate her with the truck tail-lift, IIRC..

Yeah, men. "Done it deliberate..." ::)
I thought she recovered with loss of an eye, then committed suicide in a Spanish hotel at a convention for female endeavour or similar, she was about to recieve an award and give an inspirational speech.
...in fact as i type, I remember now....they Announced it on an F1 programme as breaking news live, while they where interviewing Susi Wolf, a personal friend, who imediately quietly broke down in tears live on camera. Presenter apologised to her imediately.
...very very sad. :'(

That is a tragic tale :(
This question of women not being 'represented' in a field, 'ooh there's not many of them in....' It seems to fall into the same bracket as Asian men in the Police, and so on... yes, there arent many women in F1, there aren't as many Asian Police Officers as White, there aren't many ginger Calvin Klein models, or Papua New Guinean TV presenters on the BBC, but it grates on me a little when we start making 'allowances' to 'encourange' a minority to join a field. Let's just let people vote with their feet. Do you want to be a train driver? Yes or no. If 'yes', then bugger all the doubters who say you can't just do it. If 'no', then don't get swayed into saying 'yes' because the nice person with a clipboard is saying you can. I shall call my new concept 'free will'.
Quick story, then back to work - my old man was a Firefighter for years, and they got a load of potential trainees - only two of which were women, xx number of the men and one of the women passed. However, as it would be 'unfair' to make the one lass go through training as the only woman, they told one of the men - who had exceeded the minimum required standard to go home, and they then told the female - who had failed the minimum standard - that she was now in.
That's fair. >:(
