right,
this question is maybe asked before, i can't find anything at the moment. so, sorry for asking again.
Is it normal for the estate omega to eat tyres like they not even there/
actually the fron ones/
wishbones replaced, tracking done.
still,
i put new tyres on the front after i had second hand one the last couple of month, and still, lost nearly the half of the threat in 4 weeks.
this is getting very expensive for any car i ever had. even bigger and heavier cars didnt eat tyres like that.
i running 225 and they are not cheap.
205 are to small in my opinion for the size of this estate.
but 1700 miles and tyres half wy gone is more then a down turn to vauxhall for me.
funny thing, the rear are the one i had from when i bought the car and they still more then legal, hardly any wear on it/
any answers to this one out there?
-
It's very common when the front suspension bushes and/or ball joints are worn. Which means the geometry is badly out of spec. And that's what is ruining your tyres.
You have some fairly expensive jobs to do!
-
If wish bones have been replaced then tracking is not enough,,it needs a complete geometry set up checked and done....some one like w.i.m. do the job well...there is plenty of help on here in the search area.that explains it all in detail including the correct measurement to set it to... :y
-
Thanks, so the tracking is set up is a waste of money then?
how uch is the proper set up?
and any idea where abouts in derbyshire would be the cost effective ( cheapest ) option for this treatment?

Wheels in Motion, Chesham... about £90...
Fitting the correct size tyres might also help :-X

iirc Fleet fit in Loughborough have been recommended in the past and will use the more accurate settings needed

So you're running 225/55/16 tyres on 17" wheels? assuming we're talking about the MV6... ???
-
Wow no wonder its going through tyres then, thats 1 hell of a tyre stretch the vw guys would love to have that on their cars ;D ;D
-
exactly 225/55 r 16 at the moment.
they don't seem to be big.
i had 205 on the v70 and they felt small, so i dare thinking having 205 on the heavy estate.
sorry try to upload a pic but somehow don't work.
cdx 2,5 v6 estate model. mini facelift.
i thought the 225 was the standard version of the 2,5 v6 ?

:y 225/55 vr 16 is correct size
-
ok, sorry. vr.
thought so.
seen loads 205 and some 215 for sale for omegas.
also there are a set of aparently nearly new 215 65 for sale around my area but i think 65 dont fit?
or do they?
-
Tyre size is very much dependant on which model... people will be better able to answer your questions if you actually include some details ::)
But yes, for that car, it should have 225/55/16 tyres on the standard alloys, as per the handbook...
-
And that is why the UK MOT ought to play catch up with its European neighbours.
Tyres to be those specified on logbook and only variation being homologated manufacturers listed in handbook options. Correct( or better) speed rating too.
-
Yes, that's what we need - less need for personal responsibility and more legislation to take all the potential fun out of life!
-
Where is the fun in someone losing control of a tramlining car on its 245 40 R tyres on 5 inch steels on bound coil overs with shot shockers?
You can still have plenty of fun in a well looked after car, modded within the law (assuming you aren't in one of the endless traffic jams or stuck behind a tractor with double white lines)......
That reminds me , I must get some coilovers and blue LEDs for our Corsa ;D ;D
-
There isn't any, but you're using an extreme example to justify the idea of introducing a law to remove all personal choice from the equation.
To ask it another way, where's the fun in me fitting 16" wheels all around to my MR2 and running bigger tyres for better handling, rather than the 15" front 16" rear fitted by the factory? You're proposing we ban that, just so that we can wrap everyone in a protective cocoon in case a dumb person does something dumb.. and a newsflash: if someone is going to do something retarded, the law won't stand in their way..

In your example, presumably you're bright enough, (i know you are), to use suitable tyres for the application in mind...
Fitting 205 width tyres on an Omega just because the 225/55/16s seem a bit expensive is a rubbish excuse... in that case, fit a set of early steelies which are, iirc, 195/65/15 and probably cost £30 each... but then I suppose they'll look rubbish ::)
I can see where Varche is coming from, but you're sadly quite correct, stupid people will do stupid shit as long as they're alive enough to do it...
Incidentally I saw a bright yellow MR2 buried in a post and rail fence yesterday... didn't look too healthy with bits of body work strewn fifty yards in every direction ::)

They're not for the inexperienced in bad weather - especially if you fit cheap taiwanese ditch finders (which Varche's proposed law wouldn't solve).. very easy to swap ends and tricky to catch given the short wheelbase (depending on age) and weight out the back. Oh yes, people also have a habit of switching from the staggered wheel widths to equal width front and back which moves the bias very much toward oversteer .. yes, that bit would be fixed by Varche's law (that's what I think we should call it now ;D) assuming people paid any heed to it like they do to the fact blue LEDs are illegal.. ;D
Not impossible to catch but you better be quick on your toes!
Anyway.. I probably got out of bed on the wrong side this morning, but the idea of "make the world perfectly safe by removing all personal responsibility and latitude for being different" annoys me no end.
-
I find putting the bed next to the wall helps... although having corrected yourself, you still get up grumpy, as smacking your nose in to the wall whilst half asleep does rather dampen the cheeriest of dispositions ;D
That MR2 looked to have understeered off a bend and been corrected and held along the fence line ::) took out 5 posts, but was stopped abruptly by the sixth one looking at the windscreen...
-
It takes special skills to make a mid-engined car understeer catastrophically ;D Or really, really awful tyres.
Actually, the Mk3 was setup for mild understeer from the factory - understeer safe, oversteer unsafe, so the bean counters would tell us. If you steam in too fast to a corner and don't do anything than heave on the wheel it'd often wash wide - trail braking was a good way to keep the nose tucked in, though.

my winter tyre set is that size.. and they dont look rubbish.. just looks like an old omega instead of those posh 18s ;D
and the steering becomes very comfortable with them :)
-
well, i didn't ask the original question to start a politic discussion.
there is a lot sheit mot rules about especially germany and belgium.
they are the worsest nanny states on it. all for the manufacterer and all needs to look the same.
-
Oh dear ::)
Your car, your choice bud but put it this way.
16 inch wheels are designed to take 16 inch tyres :)
16 inch tyres are designed to fit ................. you know what i'm going to say :)
It doesn't matter what the things look like, its wrong, illegal and oppsing dangerous.
If you want to kill yourself, seriously that's fine bud. Again, your choice but if you just get hurt please feel free to come on here so we can all laugh at you :)
Pigeons and chess anyone ;)
-
:-X
195 ? never
205 ? no
215 ? maybe if no other Choice
225 ? yep, i found out they just right
235 ? maybe if they come on a good offer
as said before, smaller tyres are cheaper, yes, but safe, i oversteered bmw's before with small ish tyres on.
i like my car so i try staying on the road as it is not a 4x4.
try to get some time to go loughborough for the set up.
Thanks for the Tip.
