Maybe we could divert some of that money we keep giving away as foreign aid to keep our lads warm eh :y
Its not the first time iirc that this has happened >:(

After a vote in the house last week, 0.7% of our GDP is to be used for foreign aid......it's the law!

What an piece of utterly cr@p reporting. >:(
"Some Jimmy in the smokehut said it was to save on heating costs" Thus it must be true that he knows exactly what the top brass meant!
Often these 4 weeks are a window wherein people can take leave according to what is left on their leave allowance. Many wont be able to take all 4 although a few will. During this period there are still duties to do (guard, admin, rear party etc) and the Quartermaster world might have to catch up on stuff to prepare for an upcoming inspection. This is of course the best time of year for people to catch up on paperwork and to get a headstart on the new year. I often spent a few days around Xmas in the office to make sure things were ready for the day we get back.
This heating excuse may well be a happy consequence of the decision but not the driving factor.

Bring back the Nissen huts & pot bellied cast iron stoves! I seem to remember it rarely fell more than 5degrees below freezing inside the hut if you got the stove cherry red. Mind you, these were RN pattern stoves with an unlimited supply of desperation to fuel the flames, I believe the Booties, Pongo's & Grey Jobs in Barracks had it rather harder, finding it either beneath their respective dignities to lower themselves to
thieve scavenge fuel or more likely finding desperation in rather short supply ;D ;)
